if it would be STAR it would be SMC Pentax-DA*.....
since the tape is at the end of the writing, I'll put my pennies on DA......WR

Rather than a zoom lens, perhaps what's listed is the focal ranges when other modules are attached.

I think it's a foldable lens. And the abrasions are confirm this situation.

And please look this patent. I think this system applied to middle part!

Patent -> Pentax patents telephoto lens that can be taken apart for easy transportation

Holy Cow! It's like Ricoh walked into the Pentax skunkworks and greenlighted everything! Go Ricoh! Go Pentax!

I know nothing about len design. but is it possible:

1. optics used in astronomical telescopes allow pentax to deliver a affordable but good quality long telephoto lens
2. but pentax needs to solve the problem of an extremely long tube issue
3. and they solved it will a new idea (to make it as a foldable len)
4. and the texts hidden in the lens' info is not related to * or wr but a new description for this foldable len (that's why they hide it now)?

Sony with its $13,000 500mm f/4 lens may have lots of bragging rights now, but in the end only a few will be sold (to order, at that). However this seems to be an affordable solution for everyone wanting more reach, at the expense of a longer than normal tube... (which hopefully can indeed be transported in two separate pieces).

I can hardly believe it. Such a price makes no sense...

Yeah, that seems WAY out of line, especially with the sigma at $5k.

The DOF is so small at 500 f/4.5 anyway, tough to imagine scenarios where I'd want it smaller.
