Why? It's brilliant. Instead of introducing a whole new mount and a complete new lens lineup, you make a couple of these recessed lenses. For longer lenses, a longer flange distance is just an advantage (you're basically reusing a tube that has to be included with every lens on those short-flange systems).

+1, gazonk has the right idea here. If you are really looking for small, one can go to these specially designed lenses, maybe 3 altogether, thats as many as Fuji x1 has now. If you want to play around a little more, you can use any of the regular K mount lenses. It is brilliant pragmatism.

Compare that to the x100 - one fixed lens.

With my K5, i probably won't buy the XS lenses, but others may like to. We are all different and diverse with our shooting styles.

I'm fairly sure the focus ring is the larger one on the left side of the image and the grip on the right side is just there to hold on to for mounting and unmounting the lens.

You seem to have mixed up a few of the 'parts' on these lenses. The part labelled HOOD in most shots is labelled Part 1 in another. Obviously the hood is retractable and built in. It seems that the actual tube may also be retractable or detachable as well.

Judging by the thumbscrews etc I'd sat that the tube actually telescopes... collapses etc. It may well come apart but it makes more sense to me to be able to collapse the lens for transport.

The alternative to a recessed lens is not a new mount, but a normal k-mount lens. All of a sudden we have room for even more k-mount lenses on the roadmap, and all lenses can be used on all bodies. But no, throw the k-mount compatibility out the window and save 10mm.

Sounds good to me. A major criticism of the K-01 is that it's big for a mirrorless. This XS lens design effectively claws back some of that bigness. Presumably there will be more mirrorless K-mount bodies in future.

Having said that, I have seen lenses like you mention. Especially surveilance lenses use "something" to combat air turbullance but I don't think Pentax would include it in folding, non DA* lens...

I think I remember to have seen a video one or 2 years ago from Pentax to illustrate the image improvement obtained by atmospheric turbulance reduction on one of their product. T
It is a real issue for birders. When there is some strong wind here (50 % of the time) images obtained from the FA*600 from birds at let's say 20 meters are clearly degraded over those obtained with quiet weather conditions. So it would be useful and a clear advantage vs competitors

Yes, I remember too. It was for their surveillance cameras IIRC. Pretty impressive stuff but I don't remember if the resolution was suitable for still photos.
