How can that beast only be 560mm I still wonder.
May be it's a long-focus lens but not a telephoto one, i.e. its physical length is equal to its focal length and not shorter.

With a 45.46 register its physical length would be equal to 560 - 45.46 = say 51.5 cm or 20".

I think we don't know so far. It's like the rubber ring: the 17-70 has it as well but it's not a * or a WR lens!

I wish you hadn't posted that 250-600 Adam. It brings back bad memories of the $7,000 I couldn't raise to buy it at auction.

That rear view actually makes it look like it might telescope.

Edit: it does telescope! I thought that front thumbscrew would be for the hood, but it obviously is not!!

How much do those telescopes sell for? That might give us an idea of price range if you add more for AF, k conversion etc.

$1450 was the only price I could find online to import a 75 SDHF from Japan, but this forum post also says "around the $800 price range (back in 2008)." Of course, that telescope is much simpler in design (and nearly a stop slower) than this camera lens would need to be, I think, so add some $$.

Still, I'm optimistically hoping for something under $2500... since this isn't Hoya pricing it.

Can't they make a 560mmm lens that's 8 inches long and doesn't need it's own pack on hikes? My 60-250 is 10 inches long with the 1.7 TC on the end. (making 425 mm). YOu can't tell me that the extra 160 of FL need all that length. I can get to 510 with a 300 f4 and my TC, at a fraction the weight and length. SO bottom line for me, I'd buy the 300 F4 and use it with my TC before I'd buy this, unless it's a very good price. I can't believe that with computerized lens design they can't do more compact than this.

It's probably is so large to keep the price low.
They can make it shorter but that probably means more elements and a more sophisticated design which will mean the price will go up in development and production.

I'm hoping they can bring it out around the €1500 mark or even lower.

Looks like the same sealing ring as the D-FA 100mm f2.8 WR Macro lens.

From what I heard, this lens doesn't telescope at all, it's just big.

The theory that this lens is collapsible is interesting. The knob near the front and the marring on the body behind it might indicate the 2 lens positions. If it is collapsible, is it just for storage or is it a semi-zoom with different focal lengths?

I'm also curious about the 2 switches. 1 is probably for AF/MF. Why the 2nd? Did Pentax add optical stabilization to this lens?

The writing under that white tape might reveal the answers. If anyone at the show is tempted to peel the tape off to snap some photos, get ready to run from Pentax' ninja security force. (yes, the Ricoh corporate overlords included ninjas in the reorg)

It doesn't look to me at all like it telescopes. The only difference in the two photos (to me) is that the lens hood is extended in the second.

I'm just hoping Otis doesn't see it......I can't afford it after all the other new gear I have planned, but will be forced to buy it if he makes the demand. A few nights of that Devil Squirrel banging on his new steel drums and you will do anything for relief. I hope the IQ is great, it could be a good seller for Pentax.
Regards!
