New XS lens has strange groove/hole at K-mount

What is it? It's only one photo where we can see it.

Wait, what are you talking about? I thought it was the circular line on the mount, not the hole near the aperture lever.

Ok, I fail to see what's strange about it.

Me too, don't see anything strange about it, there is always hole around the aperture level.

By the way, does the 40mm XS lens mounts properly on the k-5? I like to give it a try if it is priced similarly to the DA 40.

Well, in the Singapore user community thread, someone actually tested the XS on the K-5 and the pictures turned out OK.

I don't know all current Pentax AF lenses from experience, but the DA40 XS lens looks to have a mount made of aluminium? It looks duller than the mounts I'm used to.

I thought the same when I saw the picture above... but then maybe it's just that picture, because I've seen other pictures of the DA40 XS mount and they are much shinier (like what we're use to).

Interesting. I wonder why they used aluminum? Cost effectiveness, weight, or...???

I assume the XS line of lenses stands for "Extra Short", but as far as that hole goes.... it could be for a sensor for future SLR's to ID the lenses.

If we are going to see a subset of lenses which are nominally K mount, but which won't work on certain cameras, there must be a way
to detect them before they cause damage. IF all the contemplated 'rear protrusions' will mount but just will lack space for the mirror
to operate, a software protection could be included in SLR software packages that keeps the camera from working when an offending lens
is detected. If they make a lens that protrudes so far that you smash the mirror just trying to install it, then we will probably have a lot of broken mirrors.
