So what sensor should be in it?
  • 36x24mm for traditional 3:2
  • 30,6x30,6mm for square 1:1
  • 33,75x27mm for your 5:4
  • 34,6x25,95mm for 4:3
  • 37,6x21,15 for 16:9
  • 39,68x16,74 for widescreenHD (2560x1080)
  • 38,912x19,456mm for 2:1 (and 4K video)

Well then a mirrorless (since you see the pixels you use in your EVF or backscreen) with a sensor of 39,68 x 30,6 mm would give all the options you need. Cut from the K-5 wafer, a very large sensor with 53,8 megapixel.

If it only wasn't so expensive

So, such a square 43.3mm sensor (~5x the surface of APSC) will come at some point in the future and will allow to shoot (with FF glass):
39.8 x 16.9 mm^2 (cinemascope 2.35:1)
37.7 x 21.2 mm^2 (HD 16:9)
36.0 x 24.0 mm^2 (photo 3:2)
34.6 x 26.0 mm^2 (compact & MF 4:3)
30.6 x 30.6 mm^2 (square)
26.0 x 34.6 mm^2 (compact & MF portrait 3:4)
24.0 x 36.0 mm^2 (photo portrait 2:3)
(So, if cinemascope if the widest which is ever shot, the 43mm square sensor may actually become 36x40mm^2 which is still the surface of the 645D sensor.)

With sensor cost playing no rôle, a lens-module based camera would be best and then, a 43mm square sensor may be used for FF optics.
I was faster!

The Hasselblad CFV 39 and CFV 50 digital backs allow for two formats, the square and a rectangle, For the CFV 39 you can choose a 39 megapixel rectangle or a 29 megapixel square. Software crops and I think there are masks in the viewfinder but not sure. If some one donates a back for my 500 C/M I would test and report back.

As much as I love the square format I would be very surprised if any DSLR comes out in it. If I am not mistaked the Hasselblad backs are 36mm square. A 30 mm square for a Pentax would be very nice but as I said very unlikely, and only slightly larger than FF.

Haven't had time to read this whole thread, but if you want some evidence that THIS TIME it is more than just a pipe dream, check out the specs on NEW Sigma lenses for Pentax mount:

Was searching B&H and noticed that Sigma has some new lenses for
Pentax that B&H has listed as "New Item, Not Yet Available". Some have
pricing already set:

12-24mm F4.5-5.6 EX DG ASP HSM II Wide-Angle Zoom Lens (For Pentax)
120-300mm f/2.8 EX DG OS APO HSM AF Lens (For Pentax)
150mm f/2.8 EX DG OS HSM APO Macro Lens (For Pentax)
180mm f/2.8 APO Macro EX DG OS HSM Lens (for Pentax)

Not sure whether we want to read anything into this, but all but the
180mm say: "Designed for use with full frame digital SLR cameras".

I suspect that the 180mm macro is also made for full frame, though it doesn't say so. (A 180mm 1:1 macro with a 1.5x focal length multiplier doesn't make a great deal of sense to me.)

Link to NEW lenses (scroll down)

Gee. Think Sigma knows something that we don't?

You hear the grass grow, as we say in German

Sigma DC lenses are APSC, DG lenses are FF. It is that simple. They make them for Canon and Nikon and some of the DG lenses make sense on APSC too which is why they offer them for Pentax.

Very simple and nothing to be read into. Not at all.

I wish it meant something more than it does, but Sigma doesn't really design lenses for Pentax per se, they just design lenses and make them available in as many mounts as they can. They sell the same lenses for Canon, Nikon, and Sony mounts, all of whom have full frame systems. All other things being equal (which is a bit of a stretch to say), it's more cost effective for Sigma to design full frame lenses because then they can market them to both full frame and APS-C users. There are exceptions of course like the excellent Sigma 8-16mm, it is aimed solely at APS-C users who want the kind of ultra wide angles shots that were previously only possible with a full frame.

No.

#1, a bunch of sigma lenses are already FF for Pentax, just because they were already designed for FF.
#2, why would Pentax tell a competitor about Pentax's plans early?

The significant thing is Sigma is marketing new lenses in K-mount. Some other manufacturers haven't done so for a while.

Yeah, and I wish Tokina would make the 11-16mm available for Pentax before I get my Pentax FF... Otherwise, I never will be able to use it (it's designed for apsc if I remember correctly). Well, it'd still be an awesome lens even on FF if my Pentax could crop to apsc size!

But some Germans have invented a microphone that actually is sensitive enough to capture the sound of grass growing
Phys. Rev. Lett. 108, 018101 (2012): Optically Trapped Gold Nanoparticle Enables Listening at the Microscale

I'm sure this forum is sensitive enough to capture even the faintest sound of an upcoming Pentax FF

Pentax might never release a FF camera, but at least they are developing FF lenses..
The latest patents from Pentax and Panasonic | Photo Rumors

OK, patenting a lens design doesn't mean at all that the lens will be developed some day. But hey it's all part of "hearing the grass grow" plan.

If they will, not this year - there will be a lot of clamor for FF glass (that are in production) not just in volume but also in kind. The FA Ltd's and the DFA's are not enough to say the least. Also, wouldn't a Pentax FF further reduce the chances of other Pentax users from buying a 645D?

Nope, it's a totally different mount. Moreover, even a totally different style of photography. Those two do not eat off eachothers markets.
