What digital has really done is shift the processing
time onto everyone. Almost no enthusiasts and only a few pros (those few who have employees to do their post-processing) have the choice any more to pay someone else for processing.
My system is 4 years old and has a quad core CPU and I hope to be upgrading later in the year to a hex processor and a new M/B. I have 8GB of RAM but the new M/B's can go much much higher and that would be a big plus in editing such huge files as would be created from a 36mpx sensor. A RAID would be essential to speeding up access to huge files on disk as well.
I have a Dell 30" monitor and the screen res is 2560x1600. This really does promote pixel peeping as the 100% vierwing mode in LR is barely 2x the native screen res for 16mpx images. You just can't help but see what's going on in the file as pixel peeping is a natural part of such a high res screen.
PP on 36mpx files would definitely slow down on 'ancient' systems but I doubt it would hurt one of the new 6 core CPU's with memory management built into the chip and 48GB of RAM.
Unless the camera has USB3 I don't see why it'd be needed from the computer unless you intended to remove the card and access the images via a card reader. The K-5 card access is lousy, to say the least (I have two K5's and the problem is with both of them) and cards are very difficult to get out as they seem to be catching on something inside both cameras. I therefore use USB to retrieve images these days but things might be better with the Nikon though.
Sorry for the rave folks.. I just woke up and haven't quite found my perspective yet.
