I still have a USB one of those plugged in that was hot-swappable in an old laptop.

Me too. It might get some to laugh, but that ans cd-rom stay the best last chance recovery when you need it.
It really is less and less useful though...

there's a delay of about 2 to 3 seconds before I see the NR applied in the zoomed portion.
given my k-5 made noise reduction 95% obsolete

i would suggest that it is completely unnecessary to use on a d800.

The more things change, the more they stay the same.

Do a test:

Only pop up in PentaxForum rumor section once a year and you'll see that you will be able to pick up the conversation at exactly the same point where you left it a year ago... or the year before that...

Seriously... a Pentax FF at next Photokina? No kidding!

Well I think September is aggressive but I think Ricoh will finally do it - in 2013.

On another thread (or maybe earlier on this one) someone claimed a D800 was worth the money when considering the former expense of precessing film.

What digital has really done is shift the processing time onto everyone. Almost no enthusiasts and only a few pros (those few who have employees to do their post-processing) have the choice any more to pay someone else for processing.
My system is 4 years old and has a quad core CPU and I hope to be upgrading later in the year to a hex processor and a new M/B. I have 8GB of RAM but the new M/B's can go much much higher and that would be a big plus in editing such huge files as would be created from a 36mpx sensor. A RAID would be essential to speeding up access to huge files on disk as well.

I have a Dell 30" monitor and the screen res is 2560x1600. This really does promote pixel peeping as the 100% vierwing mode in LR is barely 2x the native screen res for 16mpx images. You just can't help but see what's going on in the file as pixel peeping is a natural part of such a high res screen.

PP on 36mpx files would definitely slow down on 'ancient' systems but I doubt it would hurt one of the new 6 core CPU's with memory management built into the chip and 48GB of RAM.

Unless the camera has USB3 I don't see why it'd be needed from the computer unless you intended to remove the card and access the images via a card reader. The K-5 card access is lousy, to say the least (I have two K5's and the problem is with both of them) and cards are very difficult to get out as they seem to be catching on something inside both cameras. I therefore use USB to retrieve images these days but things might be better with the Nikon though.

Sorry for the rave folks.. I just woke up and haven't quite found my perspective yet.

RE Solid State Drives.

They are a great idea and would help quite a lot but they wear out pretty quickly so you'd want to be backing them up regularly.

this is actually very smart solution - there is a small bolt inside the card socket that prevent from loosing the card accindantly - if you want to take the card out you need to push it deeper and slip you finger so it come out enough to give you good grip.

holly true!!!! it's very fast.... but the live span is very limited... imagine this: 10 leyers, image opened and saved couple of times per day... for k5 its like 500mb to 1gb for d800 it'll be like 1.5gb to 4gb - read and write couple times per day and you have to replace your ssd every year...

Why don't we FF obsessed people creating bully squads and sending them to Japan for harassing and beating up Pentax officials in every single chance? Then we can enjoy a huge improvement in our photography with our "earned by blood" FF cameras? Damn the Pentax new lens line-up map... 645D too.

The price sweet spot was a year ago before the floods. Got me some 3TB drives on the cheap!

I saw 2TB drives @ 99.00 a few weeks back. Reminded me that this was the time to upgrade my HDD stack(8TB/$400). That should hold things off for a few more years imo.
