Using a half empty battery can mess things up though. And keeping a lens attached might too. But I have never seen that confirmed though. Best to not take any changes.
I did both my Kx and K5 with their lenses on!

Never heard this before, makes sense I suppose

Again, I never saw it confirmed. So please relax. Don't get scared because I'm paranoid.

I can't find the thread either. There are so many firmware threads.

I wouldn't worry about a lens. I did all my firmware updates with a lens attached.

Thanks for the update Adam.
The root directory is not the DCIM folder, it's the immediate folder opened when the card is explored on your computer.
Follow the instructions on the Pentax website for the update.

Given that I don't think I've ever seen a thread about firmware updates without some version of this question being asked, it would probably be a good idea to include a good answer to it in any announcements.
Won't matter, someone will still ask.

There are people that read the post like this:
Pentax just posted a firmware upgrade blah, blah, blah (queue the sound effects of an adult speaking in a Charlie Brown TV Show)
Three questions always asked, even if they are answered in the first post.
* My camera has version 1.01. Do I have to apply each update or is the last one cumulative?
* Will this work in my K-5?
* Some variation of "How do I unzip a file? / Where on the SD card do I copy the file? / What is the root?"

Having a lens attached to the body when doing firmware upgrade does not mess up the firmware upgrade. No issues with lens on body.

A few people on dpreview are saying that the new firmware disables the debug menu and pk_tether for them. Might want to sit this one out or at least wait a bit for the kinks to be known.

I wonder if they do that on purpose? Or perhaps they're bringing some Ricoh-like way of entering the debug mode - whatever that might be.

yes, saw that too, somebody was angry because can't use debug or tether for K-x. Going back to previous firmware did not helped. That's bad news. Glad i didn't update.

I guess then there must be something else that have happened. If he actually managed to downgrade the firmware everything should be as before.

Is the pk_tether thing true? Weird considering that Pentax stated earlier that they were "open" to third-party applications!

Applied the v1.03 on the K-x with lens DA 35/2.4 attached. Did so previously, never any problems. Debug mode works, and pk_tether as well.
