I hadn't considered this. I thought the patent said full frame somewhere but I could be mistaken, and even if true doesn't preclude it from being an XS design.
Patent says the lens's length is 126.32mm (5") so it's hardly an XS (eXtra Small or eXtra Short) lens...

When we're the patents filed?
Patent filed on 30 August 2010, therefore by Pentax as Hoya subsidiary.

Patent granted on 8 March 2012 to Pentax as Ricoh subsidiary.

The length given doesn't seem right, though. The 50mm macro is about half this size. Is there an explanation?

looks like they were filed as pentax-ricoh. very exiting! i guess this would be the first thing to surface which is not on the road map then
No, they were filed in 2010 (see above) when Pentax belong to Hoya.

The lens is on the roadmap: it's the Pentax D-FA645 90mm f/2.8 Macro. The 60mm f/2.8 macro covering the 35mm image circle as described in the patent as alternative #6 is only a derivative.

The D FA 645 90mm doesn't appear on the roadmap as a macro.

Dear god pentax isn't treating the roadmap like a binding contract.

Next thing you know, green lenses will start turning orange. Pandemonium will ensue.

Does a patent really mean we will ever see this lens?

I'm thinking it's pretty much a guarantee we'll see it.. I've already smashed my 35mm and 100mm macro's on the ground.

I presume the 126.32mm include the 45.46mm register (flange focal distance) of K mount, thus leaving around 80mm for the lens itself.

This would be in line with AF-S 60mm f/2.8 Micro Nikkor G (24x36; length = 89mm) and Tamron SP AF 60mm f/2.0 Di II Macro (APS-C; length = 80mm).

If Pentax delivered every lens they've patented, we'd be awash in glass. Our children would be going to be hungry as we had to pay the lens man.

Shorter form: no.

But we can dream - costs us nothing.

Why 60mm? It's exactly like a 90mm on full frame, a classical macro focal. It makes sense, in the Pentax fashion to present crop lenses, to have a set made of 35mm, 60mm and 135mm macro, to replace 50, 100 and 200. Why design it for full frame? To sell the patent to Tokina, for full frame Canikon cameras.
It wouldnt surprise me if this lens is a WR metal clad version (much like the 100 WR) and replaces the current DFA 50mm macro lens on the market. The WR alone would make many macro shooters consider upgrading to a new lens, and make those who value WR (like myself) consider purchasing it.

As Eurostar mentioned, making a 60mm macro lens is a fantastic idea, and if Pentax has in mind to upgrade their current plastic based DFA 50mm, this would be a solid choice. It would be similar enough in focal length so that full frame shooters (film...potentially digital, but Im not touching that can of worms...) wont be too disturbed from their usual 50mm focal length, but APS-C shooters will have a macro on digital that feels close to that 90mm-100mm that so many people enjoy, instead of the 75mm feel they have now using a 50mm lens on their digital bodies. This has already been done by Nikon, Canon, and Tamron.

All in all, if they take the 100mm WR and make a 60mm version of it, Id add that lens on my LBA list pretty darn quick. Especially now that my partner owns a K-r...there would be a macro lens for each of us to shoot with

DFA50/2.8 macro is rather old fashioned already...
