K-r successor: K30

I disagree with the premise of this thread. I still believe we'll see a K-r replacement, the K30 will be the mid-level line.

But the K-r is really a mid-level camera! It gets a lot of rave reviews because they compare it to true entry level cameras, but it has better specs than them. Or had, at the time of introduction (and even now, it's a terrific deal for the current price, just yesterday it was recommended as the best deal for the money in a large newspaper here).

I don't see why it shouldn't be mid level, nor why there should be another low level.

Low level is K-01, is so low there is even't a pentamirror, this one is mid level, there will be a K-3 prosumer (APS-C or FF) and finally the pro is the 645D. Four level, like the spokeperson form pentax told Amateur photographer.

Because it is about 20% more expensive than the new Nikon D3200 which is a full-fledged DSLR, and up to 40% more expensive than a Canikon modestly older model still in the pipeline. This is especially true if Pentax sticks to its new pricing policy.

Pentax would be leaving major unit sales on the counter without a model at lower price points. The K-01 cannot substitute for a DSLR. It has glaring weaknesses.

Spot on!

BTW, if someone can point me to the standard definition of "mid level" I'd be grateful. I don't think we all see it in the same way, causing endless confusion. Or at least endless posts ....

He didn't just say four levels, he said four levels like Canon and Nikon. "To be competitive in the Digital SLR market you need a full range of cameras, for example Canon and Nikon have a range of 4 cameras from entry level to professional."

The "range of 4 cameras" statement only makes sense if he's referring to APS-C:
- Canon; T2i, T3i, 60D, 7D
- Nikon; D3200, D5100, D7000, D300s

exactly

I can see the 4th being a FF though, still giving a much larger face to the brand and fitting with 4 dslr. and a 4 camera mirrorless is a distinct possibility too( 2 Q models and 2 K-0 models)

It's taking so long for all the pieces to get in place that i think people revert to thinking like Hoya is still running things

Remember that the Euro price includes a lot of VAT, somewhere around 10%. Of course, with the value of the Euro in free-fall due to the Greeks, there may be grey market opportunities buying them in Europe (sans VAT for export) for use in US.

Actually up to 25-27%. The French VAT seems to be 19.6%.

Vat actually varies a fair bit but the average is in the 20-23% range Cyprus is 15% Hungary is 27%
so a 799 euro camera (the french ad with the WR lens) would be $868 based on the french standard rate of 19.6% and a 1.30 value of the euro
So best guess would be 749 body only 899 kitted with WR lens (UK prices actually look higher with the lesser lens, but UK prices are always typically high)
that fall exactly where the KR was released BTW

There still needs to be a lower model to go head to head with the entry product probably 699 kit 549 body, this is positioned at the low mid level. K3 will likely release kitted at 1500-1599 but drop pretty quickly to 1399 based on the market competitive product. the LXD will likely release at $1999 no lens. they may not actively market a kit for that model, but offer rebates for purchase with purchase allowing you to make your own kit
All speculation of course but based on where the market seems to be at, and 25 years of industry experience

No matter how you look at things this is shaping up to be the most interesting year for Pentax in a long long time
