On a 300mm wafer, the large sensors have a much higher spoilage rate than the smaller ones (meaning at least SOME small sensors are good from one wafer). At 68% more surface area the 645D sensor is actually quite difficult to produce and the small volume of finished sensors forces the development cost over a tiny number of finished product sales.

$3000 / sensor is pretty cheap in this manufacturing environment.
a valid point. at one point in time a 16 mp aps-c sensor would have been too cost prohibitive to use in a sub $10,000.00 digital camera.... but.... it happened...

At one time wafers were only 100mm, too!!

percentages and buildings? what we're comparing is more close in size to comparing different sized coins in your pocket... they're really is not that big a difference.. but the question is... is there a sensor out there to replace the kodak sensor in the 645-d? and is it gonna be video capable?
leica's s system? close to right size, but no video I suppose? Samsung's medium format sensor? they have a prototype... 36 x 36 squared. Kodak's demise could very well push Pentax back into bed with samsung.... why not?
Kodak doesn't make the sensor they sold the division their survival or demise has nothing to do with whether it is available. I used the building to visulise since you seem to think a 68% difference is almost insignificant. it is not. The samsung prototype was a fair ways back, unless they kept developing it it is not an issue. The leica currently uses a variant of the same sensor as Pentax with no live view, though they are rumoured to be developing a Cmos to replace it on the next model with STMicroelectronics....it is altogether possible that this could be a source for Pentax as well since it is the first Cmos MF under development for production AFAIK

The Kodak sensor unit was purchased and is still making sensors. They also make sensors for the Leica M9.

Indeed, it's off-topic as well - but it's not entirely implausible.

And a mirrorless 645D is?

isn't that what i said in response to the previous post?

No guarantees the next 645 sensor will originate there though (or the M10 sensor for that matter - the S3 is already rumoured to be coming from STmicro)
