That's one too many...

I suppose we'll see either a 3 APS-C formula or a 2 APSC + 1 FF formula. Hope for the latter--which, if it ever comes to life, will probably include a model lower than K30, since K-5 already sits above K30.

After seeing the D3200 pics posted by imaging-resource in their comparometer section, I hope Pentax won't put the new 24mp sensor in a successor to K-5. Pics taken with K-5 and K-x look better at any ISO. The dpreview comparative tool may leave one with the impression that the D3200 is better, but if one examines the pics provided by imaging-resources and keeps them full screen instead of enlarging them 100% or 200%, even K-x's images look much nicer than those of the D3200.

Once again Pentax have said they need a 4 dslr line "like Canon and Nikon" so the K300/K30/K3 + FF is highly likely (though the FF may not actually arrive until spring some people have speculated - personally i think they will be trying d*mn hard o have all 4 in stores by late october/early november - before black friday and the beginning of the christmas sell season

If they can come up with a four model line, then I guess we owe Ricoh big thanks for breathing new life into Pentax. (When I wrote the previous post I was thinking along the lines of the old notion of Pentax's capacity as a dslr maker.)

Many people still view it like it is either Hoya or the struggling pre hoya brand. Still struggling but the new owners seem committed and willing to invest in the brand (apparently they have been hiring back a lot of the engineers and R&D staff Hoya let go)

There is no reason they can't manage a 4 model line (at one point in the digital age it was a 3 model line) In film days there were frequently 3-4 bodies on the market

4 bodies seems to be the critical mass needed to cover the market. share is currently about half what it was when it was a 3 body lineup so that cutback (among other things) really hurt the brand share wise

I think the next 2 models are the K300 and K3 which likely will announce at or just prior to Photokina and the FF (which will likely announce/preview at photokina but release a little later - meanwhile since k5 is expected to last until the end of the year the 4 body selection can be realized without the FF getting to market before christmas probably looking like this body only
K300 - 549
K30-749
K5 - 999
K3 - 1299-1399

and later LXD or whatever the FF is - 1999

that is still only a 3 DSLR line - the 645 is a different category (I imagine it's replacement is next year but you never know)

I think this may have some hoya input but it will have had substantial input from ricoh, the models at photokina should be fully "Ricohized"

Canon has 4 cropped sensor cameras and 3 full frame cameras. I can see Pentax doing 3 cropped sensor cameras with the K30 being the mid-level. Then next year do 2 full frame cameras with the first one shown in February at CP+. The high end cropped sensor camera shown at Photokina this September. The low-end cropped sensor camera released late in the year for holiday sales.

Now where are the WR flashesand the other goodies.

And where does the 645D fit in that equation?

as a separate product category (though effectively it is a DSLR but MF is a different game), just like now. P&S the Q and K-01 are also separate categories also.
