Pentax Lens Patents: 12-24 f3.5-4.5 and 645 wideangles

I found this reported on a Japanese blog today. It looks like a design for a possible replacement for the DA12-24 f4. It also shows designs for 25mm and 26mm 645 lenses.

I don't pretend to understand the technical implications of these designs, but am I right in thinking that a variable aperture 12-24 could be made more compact than the current one? Perhaps someone more technically minded could comment.

In Japanese:
Pentax 12-24mm F3.5-4.5 ?????????????So-net???

It might be smaller and more affordable, but in the new patent the widest aperture would be even bigger, which kind of contradicts the size thing..

Thanks for the reply. Smaller and more affordable would be welcome. There was also a patent for a 12-35 f3.5-4.5 a while ago, which is a very attractive range for me, but the "Wide Zoom" lens indicated on the roadmap for 2013 looks more like a 12-24.

IMO I would rather that Pentax expanded their range a little more than released lenses that have pretty much already been released. I can't see any particular advantage in this lens compared to the current 12-24. If they are just planning to release the 645d version then that would be very welcome- I think they said they were not happy with the 645d wide end?

What zoom range do we think th limited zoom will be?

Hm, wait, didn't Sigma do something similar with a wide angle zoom? Is the variable aperture version of that lens better or worse than the fixed aperture?

This might mean that the current 12-24mm is being phased out- though I don't see why it's in need of being replaced, as it's a very good lens. If I were Pentax, I would focus on all the failing SDM lenses first.

and with less chromatic aberration - the level of ca exclude this lens from professional use... imho.

On the lens roadmap there is a wide zoom (in the 2013 or later section). Though I would have thought the area the smudge covers is more like 14-28 ish.
This patent was are during the Hoya period wasn't it? 14-28 would be quite a useful range IMO. More useful to have two different ranges than two the same anyway.
