With the MP count of the D800 vs. the 645D's, is the IQ really that close? One is a 36x24 sensor the other is 44x33

Look at one of my samples with the D800E I posted in the 36MP club. I can't see any difference in quality wrt my 645D samples.

A problem I can see is the MF crop the 645D uses: only 44mm width vs. 36mm. That's just 1.22x more and the widest 645 lens (25mm) is a 21mm equivalent lens (20mm using the diagonal) which even if from Zeiss are affordable for 35mm.

IMHO, the announcement of the 645 25mm lens price has moved the 645D off radar for many.

The legendary Zeiss Distagon T* 21mm f/2.8 ZF is almost only 1/3 price of the Pentax which is a 20mm F3.1 equivalent with the 645D crop.

I wouldn't buy into a Pentax fullframe system if they would not produce any current lenses and instead expect me to only buy old glass. It wouldn't give me the confidence that they are serious about it.

Also, I'm mostly an autofocus shooter. So that rules out any old MF-only glass for me. Besides, current DSLR viewfinders aren't made with MF in mind anyway, and replacing the focusing screen throws of spot metering. Been there, done that. But that's me.

Right now, pentax produces 8 lenses which they have described as full frame. Between the 35mm f/2.4 and the 200mm f/2.8, I think that number would be 10 if Pentax introduced a FF. And I also believe that the 560mm f/5.6 will certainly be FF, the 24-75mm will almost certainly be full frame, and the new 12-24 might be full frame.

So by the end of 2013 I think we're looking at 12-13 full frame lenses.

DA lenses do not necessarily support fullframe sensors, and (to my knowledge) are not marketed as fullframe-capable; the 35mm is described as a standard prime, not as a wide-angle prime. And even if the image circle would cover the sensor area, I would be concerned with corner sharpness. That already degrades on APS-C on most of the current lenses. On fullframe it would be much, much worse.

I've seen samples of the D800 vs. 645D but somehow the ones I've seen aren't "same photo of same subject in same conditions" controlled environment types...
