That link only shows 5 products if I am correct. I just got out of bed so there's chance my brain isn't on the money yet... lol

Anyway, it looks like I will be buying a D800E unless I chicken out. The idea of selling any of my Pentax lenses or cameras is abhorrent though..

Ooh the D800E looks sweet. I hate to pay $2 grand on the 14-24mm wide zoom though. A damn expensive investment. Maybe I can sell a body part? IDK if I could sell my complete Pentax setup just to purchase the body alone. I really like my K5 but I see various benefits in the Nikon camp and especially the D800E. I really wish Pentax had a FF or much cheaper 645D. Landscape is my thing. Decisions...

Agreed. For me (I insist, for me) the difference between a Pentax FF (as I see it) and a D800 is that the Pentax I could make a big present to myself and get it. It would be very expensive but workable. The Nikon, no way. Cam price is a thing but optics price really is way over my head. Not that they suck, I don't think so at all. But I won't be able to justify this until I (I can dream though) get some proper revenue with Photography.

Just to see people's reaction.
Olympus have already done that with the E5.

Would it be ballsy if Pentax abandoned the AA filter entirely and instead put a Moire reduction filter that can be turned on off like how we have shadow, lens corrections in camera?

I wonder how feasible an adjustable AA filter would be. Canon is releasing a version of the EOS 60Da that is targeted for astrophotography that is interesting.

'ballsy'? Not really, Pentax has already done it and so has Nikon. The K5 replacement will probably have 24 MP or so... I don't think I'd *ever* have Moire at that resolution, but my pictures aren't generally of man-made things.

Pentax has already done it? As far as I know, the K5 has a pretty strong AA filter. Which, by the way, cannot be removed.

An AA filter cannot be emulated electronically.

However, there is one way to build an adjustable AA filter: let the sensor shake (using the shake reduction motor) with ultrasonic frequency and small amplitude.

About the expensive nikon glass thing... Don't they have cheap F1.8G lenses ready for FF?

28mm f1.8g vs FA 31mm f1.8
50mm f1.8g vs FA 43mm f1.9
85mm f1.8g vs FA 77mm f1.8

Add them up and you'd see that the nikon glass is much cheaper. Of course we are comparing mid tier nikon optics vs top end pentax optics, but the images I have seen from the 50mm and 85mm are very very fine indeed.

I was told that all an AA filter does is blur the image slightly to prevent moiré effects when shooting grids, fences and such. Blurring can very easily be done with software, either in the camera body or in PP.

Personally, I would have no problem at all with manually locally fixing a bit of moiré in PP that might appear. If that gets me much sharper pictures.

That's wrong. Even the term AA filter is technically wrong.

What happens is a necessary spreading of color information prior to Bayer filtering. If not done, color information is destroyed forever and cannot be recovered. It can't be done electronically to the raw data either because a red sensel cannot capture the information of a blue sensel.

What people call moiré pattern actually is a so-called false color moiré pattern. Sensors with a microlens array produce no classical moiré artefact.

All you can do is to try to detect the false color moiré pattern after the fact and desaturate it. However, this step desaturates parts of the image and destroys detail too.

Pentax go for a tiny, solid build and you pay a lot for that. Though hopefully the new 50mm f/1.8 will give Pentax a good cheap 50 for people to get hooked on. I just hope it doesn't feel like the Canon 50mm f/1.8.
