Ned: weatherproof line will be at...

Rob, I understand your concern about being stuck between retail prices and on-line service, but in reality we simply want to balance the experience better between store presence and only being on-line. And if we prevail, you'll end up seeing more storefronts (photo specialty and mass accounts) carrying Pentax. And if we renew lens rebates, for many users it'll mean they have more choices in where they want to buy. Yes, we were in Costco several years ago, but I think you'll be pleasantly surprised when you find out that our weatherproof line is now being carried in over 1700 stores whose primary color is red. It's a first step but important on many levels. Thanks, Ned

Yeah... I don't know about Target. They don't enforce their training and $400 waterproof cameras may not do as well in a store that focuses more on selling cheaper and cheaper devices. I also hate to say it but the Targets nearby my Best Buy have been saying some really stupid things to get customers to return the cameras I sell them. Two of the most prominent cases were one dipshit telling a lady that the T3 and T3i were the same and she shouldn't have paid more then $500 for either. Another case was someone 'exchanging' a red Sony W560 point and shoot because the customer wanted a blue one. Lo and behold, the blue Sony was a W530 and the kid behind the counter did the exchange with some open box item which was later sold.

I also particularly liked the fella on the phone who thought Pentax was some sort of house brand for Best Buy.

I don't mind at all having to price match and play on a level playing field, but stupid is as stupid does. To see for yourself, simply walk into any nearby Target and ask them about the GoPro, D3100 or hell, even ask them what "DSLR" stands for.

"our weatherproof line is now being carried in over 1700 stores whose primary color is red."

I think he's talking about the Optios being the "weatherproof line"? I was just at Target a few days ago and they had a few Optios left and they was marked down 50% on clearance- not a good sign for Pentax... not very hopeful. People who go buy cameras at a store like this are more likely to reach for a brand that they recognize than buy Pentax.

They had better clear those out because the WG-2 is out now- and the competition already owns the WG-1.

Maybe this means the soon-to-be-released K-r sucessor will be weather sealed? Well, we can always dream (and invite pages of speculation on internet fora)....

At MSRP, a K-y WR will be close to the current price of the K-5.

How is the new bout of megapixel wars going to effect this? Will a K-4 replacement with WR and at least the K-5 sensor be adequate to go against the new entry level 24 mp body Nikon just announced?

I don't know and perhaps none of us knows, but it could be that a 24 meg sensor is Sony's current standard issue sensor? So if you want to buy a mainstream sensor at a mainstream price to put in your camera then this is what you go for. After that, you depend on your engineers to tweak it for best effects. No idea, just saying. Whatever sensor they do go for, Pentax seem to have a good record at getting the best from it.
