I think it should be expected that the K-30 will share features of both the K-5 and K-r. The battery situation is one aspect we have see is probably K-r and not K-5. I'd love to have all K-5 features in the small body like a metal alloy body or quiet shutter/mirror, but at that price point I don't see it happening. It still will be appealing to K-x/K-r owners, *ist/K10/K20 owners, and K-5 owners looking for a second body (along with various people outside of Pentax land). I really would be surprised if it pulls in the expensive features of the K-5. I'll be curious to see if even the K-01 and K-30 features align... my guess is no. It should be a great camera for what it is at that price point.

The K-30 probably has the K-01's updated image processor.

- k-01 : 680

So what's the point of the k-01 now ?
Could it be really considered as entry-level at this price ?

Also, I think that megapixels really matters for a lot of people (not only newcomers), when I bought a k-r a few months ago, the 3 first questions I was asked by colleagues (two 600D users) :
- price
- megapixels
- lens

So what most people will see in the next following months :
Pentax 16 Mpx vs cheaper Nikon D3200 24 Mpx
Easy choice in my opinion... :/
How does Canon ever manage to sell enough G and S series compacts to make it worthwhile when they have actually gone backwards on megapixels?

I'd imagine the D3200 buyer is the type that would buy primarily on price and would buy anything half decent as long as it were the cheapest. So this camera doesn't fit into that niche. So? Why does every camera have to chase that segment?

Anyone that is even slightly thinking of the purchase of more than the minimum would likely do a bit of research and take more factors into consideration other than price.

That's what I think will happen.

Newbies: K-01
$800 for newbies? Not a chance, when EPL1 sells for $280 . Nex-C3 sells for $600 ..

I'm still wondering why those stupid guys at Pentax like to mess the model names up! This should simply be K300, as K7 & K5 should have been K30 & K40, and K-m, K-x & K-r should have been K1000, K2000 & K3000. Rumored FF could be K1 then. Now look at all those stupid model names that after 5 years nobody remembers which was what!

I must agree that 799 price is rather high.

Its fantastic addition to the range.
The size of about a D90
The D90 is slightly larger than a K-5. It's pretty clear that the K30 is smaller than a K-5. I've just been looking at photos and it seems about K-r size to me.

It's just an intro-level replacement for the K-r, spiced up with something new for a change (the added buttons and weather sealing).

I find it funny that after complaining about the discontinuation of the K-r for so long, so many people are asking this very question. The new K30 will be priced just slightly higher than the K-01, which would make sense, as it's a DSLR after all. Regardless, it's still going to be in the intro-level range, though I fear that the affordability of Pentax cameras is coming to an end.
But it seems so similar to the K-5 that it's virtually indistinguishable feature-wise. If the K-30 is as identical to the K-5 as it first appears, why invest engineering time and gear up a new manufacturing process when they could have just continued selling the K-5 as that K-r replacement? That would have saved time and money for Pentax, and given consumers the same excellent product as the K-5. I see 3 reasonably possible answers to my question:
  1. The K-30 has as yet unknown improvements to the K-5 design.
  2. The K-30 is lacking more K-5 features than just the top LCD, in order to fill a specific niche in the new Pentax lineup.
  3. Illogical consumers only want to buy "new" models regardless of whether they are improvements over the old model. The K-30 is basically a new skin and new name for the K-5 so it continues selling. The "old and obsolete" K-5 won't be featured on the cover of magazines but the same features in a new shell will get fresh rave reviews. This is a crazy system but it's not Pentax' fault; many manufacturers do this.
None of this is a criticism of the camera or Pentax. I'm just thinking about the gaps in what we know about the new Pentax lineup.

Wow, 18 pages in just under 12 hours, and for a leak of a mid level model at that. Must be some kind of PF record.

I can't wait to see what the reaction will be when/if a FF is leaked.

Could this mean the end of limited LV/recording?
I do believe that I saw little puffs of smoke coming out of them in a similar pic.

This one will be melted before any smoke seen, as it's weather-sealed!

I personally will abandon PF & dpreview for a few weeks then. Even with the so called K3 I'm afraid both of these forums will be converted to something like what Nikon (D800) and Olympus (E-M5) are doing on dpreview.
