Huh ? Why would anyone want the camera to be more expensive ? If the K30 is truly the entry-level DSLR from Pentax, then even $750 seems a bit high.

Canon T3i is already $749 with lens. It's 18MP which a lot of newbies will care about. But Canon has other cheaper bodies (T3).
Nikon D7000 is $699 with lens.
Nikon D3200 is $699 with lens. And 24 MP, which again a lot of newbies will care about .

That was a tongue in cheek joke.

Surely the K-30 will be in a similar category to the Canon 60D, same twin dials, missing a LCD but has WR.

How about guesses for it's specs?

Will the K-30 have TAv? I think it will
WIll the it have a tiltable screenlike the D5100? I tihnk 50:50 chance, the bulge suggests that
Will it have a cable release soket? I hope so
Will it have User modes? I don't think so
Will it have twin slots? I don't think so but the next model up will

Actually I think you're right - I thought of the T3i because I completely forgot about the 60D.

But I hope it's got the k-5's weathersealing (which is as good or better than the 7D). The 60D's weather sealing is supposedly less than the 7D.

I'm quoting MSRPs. What they were introduced at - and those MSRPs are pretty consistent.

The Nikon D3200 is entry level. If the D3200 is $699, tell me what the D5200 is going to be priced at?
It doesn't really matter if you want to call it entry level or not entry-level. Most newbies are going to look at cameras in a certain price range. I certainly was when I bought my K200D in 2008. K200D was the entry-level then, and was already a WR body. I couldn't afford the K20D which was the higher-end and over $1K then.
I have no idea what the D5200 will be priced at, but I know what the T3i, D3200 and D7000 are priced at today.

Q-2 with a bigger sensor (to actually use the full space inside that Q cavity, if I am correct), and the Q dropping to $399 retail would be nice.
Has it been confirmed the Q's imaging circle can cover a bigger sensor? How big?

I'm not sure - people were saying how the Q's sensor holding thingamajig could fit a larger sensor in there. I don't know if the Q lenses have a larger imaging circle than the sensor though.

I kind of figured the K-01 was the K-r replacement. I am glad to see the K-30 and I am glad to see it does not look like it was made by Fisher-Price. It is a good looking camera.
How can you even think that ? The K-01 is not even a DSLR. It has no viewfinder. It is just a different type of camera. We are not just talking about minor features here.

Seems to me this K30 is more of a K200D successor, which was the entry level body for some time in 2008, until Pentax introduced the cheaper non-WR K2000 / K-m body later that year.

Eddie, you missed the earlier posts, speculating that it is machined out of a solid block of aluminum. (Seriously - they're here someplace.) Probably the hexo-lithium alloy with the rapid thermo-transport crystalline alignment. That's why it's the K (for Kelvin) 30 - it tends toward a stable state of 30 Kelvin.

And comes with mittens .....

maybe because word finally got out that too many megapixels on COMPACT cameras was a bad thing. everyone who's ever had a compact camera knows all too well how their night/indoor shots look, and when the mp count on those just got ridiculous the new marketing blurb given to salesmen still in high-school was now "less is more".

but people who buy bigger, non-pocket cams, are willing to carry something thats heavy and doesn't fit in their jeans because they are seeking "moar, moar, moar". whether that's mp or zoom. those numbers are easily understood, because even if the common big box retail consumer knew what ISO was, all these cameras have 128,000 ISO now didn't you hear?
That's awfully revisionist. There is no slowdown in the megapixel race in the cheap compact segment. Just look at the Sony and Panasonic roadmaps if you don't believe me. Those are for people who consider solely or primarily based on price and megapixels alone. The same market as the T3 and D3200.

The buyer that would even consider spending twice the dollar amount on a G or S camera would also be the type that would look at features like the dual control dials, sealing, or image sensor. You dismiss the possibility of this existing in the DSLR market and consider anything that doesn't chase that goose as something doomed to be a failure.

Of course it exists, thats the whole point of having tiers.

This person that spends twice as much on G or S cameras with an appreciation for manual controls and understanding of pixel density would by your own logic, also spring more for the K-5 (or it's successor) and not settle for an entry to mid-tier camera like this K30. maybe as a competent backup, but the G and S series are the Semi-pro/pro models of the compact world, not the middle tier this obviously consumer oriented, multi-colored K30 represents. what exactly do you think the K30 is competing with if not the T3 and D3200?

And before you ask, no, silver and black aren't colors. they're finishes.

I paid CAN$749 for my K200D with the 18-55 and 50-200mm lenses.

The K200D had just been very well-reviewed in DP Review and I was going travelling and wanted AA batteries after a bad experience with proprietary Lithiums recently.

Pentax needs a lower tier model to compete.

Just imagine if those were 18-55 and 50-200 WRs. Leave it to Pentax to be late to its own party.

As usual, the launch price won't be as cheap as we hope I guess. But it'd come down to Kr level very soon.
