Don't get me wrong. I didn't say I didn't want to spend $700 on a body. I already, did back in 2008, when I bought a K200D, and I would spend it again on the K30.
I am just pointing out that if the K30 sells for $700, it will inevitably be compared with other cameras at that price.

$700 is still a bit high for DSLR newbies, if the K30 is to be the bottom of the line Pentax DSLR .
Seems like $700 is not an entry-level price.

Apparently, the Canon T3 can be had for $329 .
Link before Amazon changes its prices by $500 again : Amazon.com: Canon EOS Rebel T3 12.2 MP CMOS Digital SLR Camera and DIGIC 4 Imaging (Body): Camera & Photo
Note, I'm not saying the K30 and T3 are in the same class. Just saying Pentax doesn't have any DSLR body anywhere near that price.
But maybe it's just a closeout price like the $299 K-r I got. Still, an amazing price for a new body.

The Nikon D3000 appears to be the cheapest Nikon DSLR offering at $486 right now : Amazon.com: Nikon D3000 10.2MP Digital SLR Camera with 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G AF-S DX VR Nikkor Zoom Lens: Camera & Photo .
Yeah but Pentax bodies are always listed higher than they end up. Look at the K-r. When it first came out it was like $800 a lot of places but several months later a body could be had for far less. Now they're going for $500 K-x prices or even less sometimes on clearance. The price of the K-30 will ride high for a few months but eventually drop closer to $475-600 something, you watch. But that does seem to be the usual price point for an entry level Pentax DSLR most of the time. Just because it's listed at $800 doesn't mean they won't drop the price to sell more of them once the first rush to grab one has died out a bit. They just want to sell as many at that inital price point as they can while it's new and hot. At $500 I'd think this camera was a steal actually with the WR and all. I'll be watching them for a while, saving up, but for $500 I'd probably grab this as a main body for work and relegate my K-x to second body status. Be stupid not to. At $800 it can wait a while though. I'd want one but I'd probably grab one used before I'd likely go that high.

Good point!
Then I'm going to guess its a thumb grip. As shown in gazonks avatar:
I don't think I'm touching that point on that picture, since I'm using an MF lens, but otherwise I agree, it makes a whole lot of sense to have a grip there.

Looks like this will indeed be a K-r replacement for me, since i sold mine the other day. I didn't read the whole thread, was there a mention of a release date?

As far as looks, I think the K-30 is an improvement over the K-r, but I still think the K-x is the best looking of the bunch.
Couldn't agree more. The K-x has simple good looks. The K-r looks like a domehead, and the K-30 reminds me of some more recent South Korean car designs (Hyundai Veloster and 2012 Genesis Coupe spring to mind; pocked steering wheel grips, strong angles and heavy-handed detailing).

The 18-55WR is probably the most inexpensive WR lens out there. I can see the K-30 being sold in either the 18.55, 18.55+50.200 kit, or the 18-135. Now, will Pentax market it similarly to the K-5? You know like... pouring water over it?

Any marketing to show off the WR of the camera would be brilliant.. as long as it's not like they've done in the past for some things...

I was hoping I would not see this photo again, hahah! But yeah. They ought to have better marketing people by now. I hope.

Rather weak answer IMO
Horses for courses.

Some people will prioritise the Sony's ability to auto-focus during video. Others will prefer the convenience of the 18-135mm as a kit lens option for $800 all-in.

Some will be swayed by the D3200's headline MP count, or its lower price.

Some will lean towards the Sony or the D3200 because of silent(ish) autofocus compared to Pentax's cruder-sounding screw.

Others will appreciate the K-30 for reasons we're all aware of.

Yah.

For me what really lets it down is the pointless heat-sink style stripes on the camera's left.
+1.

They are dumb dirt traps. They alone are the reason I couldn't get a K-30 in white (I have a white K-x currently and even with that smoother design still spend some time with earbuds and toothpicks every few months just to keep it looking clean... living in in the middle of downtown Hong Kong puts some grime on your stuff).

Unless the K-30 has some magical AF superiority over the K-5, I'll take the K-5's pentaprism, magnesium alloy chassis, faster FPS and top LCD. Having said that, I'll wait to see what the K-5 successor offers first.

Not to say that the K-30 won't be a success; I think it'll do well, especially after the price erodes a couple of hundred dollars. But it really needs to be sold with the 18-55WR. That's the brand differentiator. Pentax can be the 4x4 of cameras.

unless it really is a heat sink.. in which case forms follows function... Pentax cameras have had a solid feel to them due in no smal part to the metal body construction.. so it is very reasonable to speculate that this is a metal bodied camera and the body is being used as a heat sink for the sensor...
First time did a little guffaw and moved on... now you've said that twice, I'll intervene and say that is beyond dumb.

Wonder if this one can focus properly?
I don't care for the looks quite ugly but that's not what really counts.
