New to the discussion...

I'm not seeing heat dissipation fins others mentioned when I look at this. This camera is WR. That spot sits exactly where my left thumb rests when using AF lenses. To me, it looks like a molded-in thumb grip surface instead of another piece of glued-on grippy rubber material.

Frivolous styling? Maybe. Or maybe a bit of odd-looking functionality?

My head hurts.

I don't see any reason why one new model has to be a "replacement" for another, specific model. That's entirely too limiting (last thing Pentax needs) and the market doesn't care about taxonomy in any case.

Nor do I understand why so many here spend so much time discussing it. Other than it's fun ....

huh? no, after the new user gets "initiated" he/she will fully appreciate the 2nd dial and likely never go back to a single dial camera. my point was that newcomers won't buy it just for the 2nd dial. They don't know what they're missing etc.
So I ask again, how in the world does Canon sell enough G or S series cameras to make it worthwhile when they've gone backwards on megapixels over the past few years?

New users will never buy those, it's $200 more than cameras with more megapixels and 10x zoom.

OH NO

I guess new users DON'T buy G or S series Canons. They go for the one with most 'zoom' or highest megapickles. Advanced users know that in a compact camera crazy megapickles do not equate to high IQ. Slightly different in a DSLR... 24mp looks useful on the Nikon D3200. Necessary? Probly not.

Meh, the thing with 24MP newbie DSLRs is that.. well, they mostly take photos to share with family, so they need to fit email, social media.. meybe small prints, but 10MP is enough for that, and even then you will be resizing to mail them. 24MP has a use, of course, but with the entry level Nikon it is completely a marketing move because it will rake in more sales from ignorant people. I think something like WR and better lens compatibility is much more useful in an entry level DSLR. But most people only see numbers like MP and max ISO..

I seem to mistake the green button for the AF button and vice versa on the K-5 but I think it's more about my muscle memory than actual layout. But maybe K-30 solves it?

Affordable WR is a pretty good thing in entry level cameras. As long as it's paired with a WR lens bundle. And also some massive warning note that says "USE WR LENSES IF YOU WANT TO KEEP THE CAMERA WR".

The general people aren't that smart

Well, I think you're right. People still buy the D90 at a pretty high rice for what it brings, I guess based on the good reputation. Pentax K-5 is one of the most praised cameras in its class so maybe just keep it and let it sell on old merits?

So no, the D7000 is actually "older" by five days.

I see your points but for someone that has a 50"- 60" flat screen tv and wants to display their pics on it, more MP's will be a good thing. Lots of people have big tv's now. I would imagine that many people would expect that their camera should take full advantage of it.

And these TVs are, at best, 1920x1080, i.e. 2MP.

Like I wrote previously, it is not like they won't be getting the components to continue to produce K-5's for a while. Seeing how closely related the new releases (K-01 & K30) are to the K-5, that is. They are essentially piggy-backing the two new releases off the K-5 and vice-versa. Good strategy for buying more time for future product development.

exactly

even the 4k stuff Rare but available isn't overly demanding 3840 x 2160 or about 8 mp

and the next thing 8K is under development and is 7680 x 3840 which will need a 30 mp file if you are very rich and have a huge room (panasonic has announced an 8K 145" plasma no price available)
