It is not clear atm. if this will be the 18-55 II or the 17-70.
The latter lens hasn't been finalised yet, it will be the 18-55 II. The 17-70 isn't even scheduled to be announced at PMA, probably will happen by Photokina 08.

the thing is Pentax has allredy spoled us with GOOD cameras that had prefomces that = or excied cameras that where 400-500$ cheeper than the others and was a BIG factor in a lot of people buying them. so if they put out a camera that is as much or more there going to lose on sales

It is always a delicate balance. You want to be price competitive to drive sales, but you want to make a profit and avoid creating a huge demands that you cannot meet. For example, if K20D is as popular as D300, then Pentax would be in big trouble as its production facility simply cannot cope. You would just end up with a lot of angry unsatisfied ex-customers.

No,
In sweden D300 is around 1650-1700 EUR. 1299 EUR is actually a little cheaper than Sony A700.

People in the States need not be worried because prices in Europe normally are the same as in the US but in bucks, i.e. 1299 Euro -- US $ 1299.

Looks like an SDM version of the well known 18-55, Richard?

according to a dealer in Germany.

This is 300 Euro more than the K10D in 2006.
Hmm. What the hell are Pentax thinking? It's not just €300 more than K10D at it's introduction but it's €200 more than Canon 40D costs now! Well, for such price it must be way better than Nikon D300 and must simply demolish Canon 40D. It can't be just K10D with new sensor and LiveView. It must have new much improved metering system, new much better AF system, both of which outperform Nikon D300. And this new 14 megapixel CMOS sensor must wipe the floor with Sony 12 and Canon 10 megapixel CMOS sensors. Otherwise K20D will be big dissapointment. Honestly, I doubt K20D will able to do that...

Also interesting how much they will ask for K200D. Looking at supposed K20D price I would guess they will price K200D not less than K10D costs now. But in that case Pentax simply won't have competitive entry level camera which costs in the area of €500. And if they price K200D ~€500 and discontinue K10D, price difference between K200D and K20D (€1300 and considering that K10D is discontinued) is too large, they must slot something inbetween.

Hmm, you know, if K20D will be priced at €1300, K10D won't loose its resale value anytime soon. Probably those in USA which can get rabate for K10D now will be able to sell it a few months later for more than they paid for it.

Really, I am not impressed...

Those who don't have K10D rush to shops and get it until it's not too late...

I would say that if the K20D is that price, then it is coming in above the K10D. So logic range would say the following:-

K100D super - to rival the D40 and 350D(XTi)
K200D - to be above the 400D and D40x and to rival the A200 and E-510
K10D - To be a rival to the 40D (although far superior) and the D80 (D90?)
K20D - to rival the D300, E-3 and A700 (maybe the 5D) but at less cost.

But of course Pentax won't think of this..........:-)

This is 300 Euro more than the K10D in 2006.
The initial price of the K10D in Norway was 8995 nkr. This indicates a initial price of 11995 here.

A bit too high IMO. Becauce the 40D is 8995 nKr and A700 is 9995 nKr. But this depends on what it has to offer. The D300 is 12995 nKr.

People "over there" (in US) don't understand european prices. They always seem to believe they can use a simple current calculator. Not because they are stupid, not at all, it is just the way they are

I think you need to give them some price examples of cameras in the near price segment from the ame store. A700, 40D. D300

Is this just another speculative thread? How do you know the k20D will be 1299 euro and with this lens kit?

If indeed it sells here for 1299 euro, don't expect the price in the US top be 1800+. Things are ALWAYS more expensive in Europe. Just today, I saw a K10d kit (18-55) for over 800 euro...thats the going rate here in Greece. (thats almost 1200 US dollars.)

I know what you mean fototim

I bought the K10D for £600 in April 2007 but now its £479. knowing the the exchange rate between euros and Pounds 1299eur would be about £800, right into the sights of the 40D, but cheaper than the A700 and D300 (let alone the E-3). I suppose it depends on how Pentax want to be perceived. If logic is right and the existing cameras are made (unlikely) then the £800 for a K20D would be reasonable considering on what it potentially can do. However If Pentax do what they normally do, and totally replace the existing range, then £800 would be considered a little steep.
If I was Pentax I would keep the existing range to lure new users to the system, and keep the K20D as the piniccle of the range, with existing users, knowing what it can do, along with the rave reviews that it will surely get. (ala K10D) Knowing that the K20D is at least equal to the D300 (the current must have APS-C) but at a lesser price.

But that me, I am not in marketing. :-)

Can't people wait until we have some SOLID information until you start writing off the camera?

You don't know the specs, you don't know the price (who knows where this €1299 come from, it may be from the most expensive store, or it could be a complete speculation), you don't know the image quality... and you already start expressing disappointment!

This is quite absurd and ridiculous! Talk about Pentax not given a fair chance....

When the K10D came out in Germany (1299 Euro was the price Blende8 was told for Germany) the price range was quite limited, IIRC: 999 Euro plus minus 100 Euro. So let's say 1150 to 1450 sounds like a good guess for Germany to me - if the seller who talked to Blende8 was correct.
Make this the same numbers in US$ and you probably know what the "cheap guys" on the other side of the ocean will have to pay (well, the US finances seem to go down, so no jealousy from my side).
