I really hope it will drop past the $200 mark for brand new in a year. That's serious hoping, and probably won't happen. I've seen and tried the Nikkor 50 1.8G through my friend's D7000 and I think it's a real great value lens.

the 35 dropped but in the UPP world it is harder to get a read of what will happen in the US. the 35 2.4 has settled to 199 up here I would guess the 50 will settle up here to 219 eventually. One advantage to having the B&M stores locally is I will be able to go in and deal for cash payment (since one way or the other we pay the tax in Canada)

In my opinion, even if it is a rehashed M 1.7 it is still a good value. The coatings that Pentax uses are very helpful and effective and much better than 2ndary brands. You can talk about how great of a deal the Nikon lenses are, but there isn't a Nikon camera that is as good as the K5 that you can pick up for the price of the K5. You have to understand, just like anything else, if the quality is there it is worth the price. Regardless if Nikon does whatever. The Pentax K5 is by far the best value in the industry and nobody is complaining about that. So please understand that you have to have a trade off if you want to be successful. Pentax is on its way up, and while some of the lenses are extremely expensive, they are making moves that will make it better for us users in the long run!

I like your optimism but do not share it. Pentax is on its way, remain to be seen if it's up or down.

Have faith in Ricoh's plan. But if you truly can't, do not despair: the truth will be revealed, and it's light shall purge the weakness from your heart.

Seriously? I think they pretty much hit bottom during Hoya years. Not being auctioned off piecemeal and closed is definitely a move in the right direction. And I think we have seen more positive steps taken in the last 6 months than in the entire time Hoya owned them. I am talking about fundamental business organization not just product releases. No company can survive long if they do not have their house in order no matter how loyal their fans or good the product. Ricoh is putting the house back in shape and that is as positive as you are going to get. Whether that will be enough to bring Pentax back to being a serious player remains to be seen but the trend is definitely up, IMHO.

Honestly, it is nice to have a cheap (er) 50mm lens, but no one buys into a brand (Canon, Nikon, Sony) based on the presence or absence of a cheap 50mm lens. Most entry level users don't have a clue what prime lenses are anyway and believe that they will just use the kit and maybe buy a telephoto down the road. At most they look for a super zoom at some point. If it sells for a little over 200 and has decent quality (aka like the DA 35 f2.4), I think it will be adequate.

At the same time, I am really hoping that Ricoh works on some higher end lenses. Improve existing lenses like the 16-50 and 50-135. Add a sealed wide angle zoom. Bring back a 135mm prime. Add some faster lenses. And so on...

Not so sure about that - I think there are quite a few teenagers picking up an interest in photography and looking for their first DSLR (or, quite often, MILC, these days) who will quickly learn about inexpensive prime lenses and their virtues while researching which camera system to choose.

The 50 f1.8 cost 300€ in France !!
Pentax is crazy, i'm seriously thinking about leaving that brand, i'm tired of such high prices for average lenses...

Pentax 50mm F1.8 SMC DA (New) - 027075217607

I'll send a message to Pentax France, this is just too much.

Arno

That settles it, then I'll stick with my plans to go for a FA 50mm f/1.4
Pentax SMC FA 50 f/1.4

Cheaper, Aperture ring (for older film bodies), and a tad wider at fully wide...

Preorders are about €230 here in the Czech Republic. That seems quite reasonable if the optical quality is about the same as the Pentax 35mm f/2.4. Also I'm sure the price will go down as soon as it's released.

A little bit high; it's 232 euro in Romania (we usually have good prices, but not necessarily the lowest).
Can't you find better prices at another dealer?

Anyone got sample shots yet?
I'm trying to decide between the FA1.4 and the DA1.8. The Sigma 1.4 is also an option.

The DA*55 1.4 is still a little outside of my price range atm.

Anyone got recommendations or samples from any of the 3 lenses they wouldn't mind sharing?

I'm looking mainly for a new Portrait Lens under $500 so any other suggestions welcome as well.

I have been using a Pentax-A 50mm f/1.7 and a Rikenon P 50mm f/2 for most portraits. Occasionally the DAL 55-300 f/3.5-5.6 @ around 85mm f/4-5.6
