Regardless how many times we post it, its still just anotherd 50mm that is already covered in the lineup with higher quality FA glass (I am expecting) instead of something new and more useful. Sigh....

Gee, can't what to sell my FA50/1.7 to get a DA50/1.8.

The link has changed

Again I apologize for double posting of the news. However, I posted direct link to the Pentax official press-reliese and it was hijacked and replaced by our internal PF link. Interesting.

We will have to wait to see reviews but from what I have seen so far I think this exactly what Pentax needed, and what many Pentaxians have been complaining about the lack of. A "gateway" lens if you will to the limited line. They now have the DA 35 f/2.4 and the DA 50 f/1.8 which are priced very competitively and have a high quality to price ratio.

I doubt anyone will be trading in F or FA glass to buy one of these but that's not the market. It serves two purposes: get new users introduced or hooked on primes, and to show potential buyers a prime that is competitively priced with Canikon. Classic retail, show the price point and then upsell to something nobody else has, the limited series.

6 lens elements in 5 groups — looks like it's a similar design to the classic 50mm f/1.7, one of the best 50mm lenses ever (in some ways better than the f/1.4). (#7 on the list at The Online Photographer: Great 50mm lenses). I'm curious about the loss of the fractional stop — not that that's a problem, but I wonder if it's an artifact of the rounded aperture blades.

Assuming it actually is the same as the f/1.7 then the difference could be the aperture blades, the lens coatings (possibly the rear element is also coated), or a change made to the anti-reflection coating of the lens body to help with keeping reflections off the sensor.

I've got one of the FA 50mm 1.7 lenses, and it is crazy sharp. Since I acquired it just a few weeks ago, I have been happily snapping away..really happy with it and recommend getting one if you can lay your hands on it. It translates to a 75mm on my K5.

Also, I am sure it will work on the new FF that Pentax is hopefully currently designing (fingers crossed!)

Well, one can dream, can't she?

Was $250 the price of the FA50/1.4 before the Hoya price increases?

I won't be swapping my FA 50mm f/1.7 for one of these, especially now that I'm also using film, but Pentax need it in the lineup.

Now they need a cheap wide prime. 18mm f/2.8 (or faster).
