K30 in many colors!

I looked at the Yodabashi website (the very big Japanese camera retailer) and found out that in Japan the K30 is available in 18 colors! That's well short of the 120 color combinations that the Kx/Kr came in but 17 more colors than most cameras. Also of note was that Yodabashi lists the K5 as "Out of production" and they no longer sell it. Like the Kx/Kr it will remain available for some time (especially outside of Japan)so don't worry if you have your heart set on one.
Looking at Japanese websites isn't too hard. I use the Google toolbar and just translate pages as required.

K30 would be a nice backup camera for the K5 but i can't see it as a replacement and certainly not as an upgrade.

In some aspects (e.g., AF and focus peaking) it will be an upgrade. If you don't value what the K-5 has to offer on top of the K-30, the K-30 could be a better buy.

But you're paying $800 just for getting better AF and focus peaking, how can this be viewed as a viable upgrade?
Sure if you don't have a K5 i understand but going from K5 (good working) to K30 is a beyond me.

Nice as the k30 is, right now a K-5 body is about the same price, so if I want a new backup body, another k-5 makes better sense. Still, the K30 has a certain appeal- a coolness factor.

Visited Yodobashi-Osaka 6/30/12

First, I am new to the forum but have been reading the posts for several years and have both Ricoh and Pentax film and digital cameras.

Second, I just finised my annual visit to Yodobashi. The Ricoh reps have taken over Pentax floor sales (companies put reps on the selling floor-They kept thanking me for owning both Ricoh and Pentax cameras). The only DSLR on display were the K-30 (in all its colors), and K-01. Additionally the Q and the GXR were next to the K-30. When I asked about why they did not have any of the other K series the response was "discontninued." This was the first time in three years that I saw a crowd in front of the Pentax display.

I tried out the K-30 and found it to have nice set of ergonomics for the small handed like me. It is very light even with the standard lens. As the body is so light it makes the camera wants to tip forward. The metallic blue is the most eye catching. The standard setup is 899000 yen. If you have a K-x like me it feels like a compact version. The buttons are similar and the menus feel the same. The remarkable thing is that I think you could take pictures one handed with breaking your wrist

I also waltzed around the K-01. It was not a happy experience. No one was looking at them while I was there. Let's just say the K-30, in hand, feels like a a BMW while the K-01 feels like a panel van. Rather than getting to far off topic I will just end it here.

Meanwhile, in Manila....

GMA-7, one of the country's top television stations, featured the Pentax factory in Mactan, Cebu, Philippines. Got a tip from one of the Pentax veterans in the local community so I waited for it. The episode was actually about cameras in general, but since the Pentax plant is in Cebu, they opted to feature it (which is a good thing, it's considered a promotion right?). Too bad I couldn't get a screenshot. My brain was locked to the screen =))

Nothing felt more thrilling than seeing the K-30 on the assembly line... lots of whites and blue bodies currently in it, showing parts up to the QC and boxing. Dammit, can't wait to see the K-30 production copies in stores!

I thought the K5 was current (but last gen) flagship whereas the K30 is the new (next gen) mid tier

so no.. its not really meant to be an upgrade from the K5.. we are in an odd place with the midtier being newer than the flagship... once K3 is released.. or at least officially announced.. then it all might make a little more sense.. maybe.

So, I am still in Osaka and went to Yaotami (Osaka train station basement level 2) and Ohbayashi (across from the Hilton). You will find K-30s only (all colors). There was one K-5 at Ohbayashi. The red color is closer to the 645D metalic red special addiation than the K-x bright red

Cost in Japan, body 66000 yen, with standard lens 79000, with 18-135 mm 89000. As you can see Japan is no bargin. As a rule Pentax equipment will be the same as the USA or higher. Sigma (Pentax compatiable lenses) lenes are much higher in Japan while Tamron is less expensive than the USA (e.g. A14P is about $189).

^ Agreed about the red k-30, certainly has a similar red to the 645 special edition.
It's probably the best of the metallic finishes, IMO.
