it's the same with all companies in all areas of consumer electronics AFAIK. The first year will have some offset from head office for costs but anything longer is built into the local dealer cost - and given the very low incidence of breakdown on lenses offering a 5 year should be a no-brainer, low cost but high return in consumer confidence.
In canada lens warranties are
Pentax - 2 years
Nikon - 5 years
Tokina - 5 years
Sigma - DC, DG and AF 5 years --- EX and APO 10 years
Tamron - 6 years
Canon I think is 1 year in Canada, so is leica
