Pentax rugged 360 degree digital camera. Wait, what?

QuoteQuote:
In addition to the 645D replacement, another DSLR and a third mirrorless solution (after the Q and K-01), Pentax is also planning to announce an updated ultra-rugged WG camera and a completely new 360 degree digital camera - probably something similar to this Tamaggo 360° imager. The Pentax WG-2 was the last rugged, waterproof, dustproof, shockproof and sh*tproof camera announced in February, 2012.

Recently the price of the Pentax Q dropped by 40%. Maybe the new mirrorless camera will be just a refresh of the Q line and not an entirely new product.

Pentax to announce another rugged model and a new 360 degree digital camera

I think they meant those as two separate cameras. One as a rugged camera and the other as a 360 degree camera. Sounds interesting.

Rugged 360 cam makes more sense i think. Like this one
Imagine what happens to it if you don't catch it and it hits ground.

Ooh, speculation opportunity. It wouldn't be a third mount system, would it? At $600 could it just be a cheaper plastic-bodied K-01? A more standard type camera without the Marc Newson aesthetics? But so soon after the K-01?

Actually, roughly $600 could even be about right for a K-mount GXR module (the M-mount module being $646 currently on popflash).

Most likely to be Q2, with Ricoh input

360deg camera.... whoa. Not interested but that's fascinating.

These new cameras, are they under the Pentax name also or under Ricoh?

That's very cool! I never saw the point of 360 degree sweep type pans as they are far too narrow, but this makes a lot of sense. No space for it in my camera bag though - far too big.

the easy way to to do a 360 pano with stills or video is a simple egg timer and a gopro...

but a I believe a k-01 in a lighter, cheaper plastic body more conservatively styled will sell big time...
I suspect i will lose the mic jack and battery from the k-01 and instead have the same battery options as the k30.
this just plain makes sense..

It’s a prototype, final product should be grapefruit size.

I have to ask - why?
Maybe a 360' lens accessory, but a full blown camera devoted to 360' photography?
I don't see the pay-off for the R&D on this one.

The problem with the K-01 isn't Newson, it's really the F mount. As long as they keep the F mount they will never be able to make it small enough to really compete with the likes of the Sony NEX line. It will have to have that big space between the rear element and the sensor.

And I thought the "official rumor" is they are discontinuing the Q line?
