Take a look at the lens roadmap, then.

I think this is pretty cool, a pancake zoom lens is just what the K-01 needs to show how it can be a small package by hiding most of the lens in the body. I presume it'd be shorter than the Nex cameras with their 18-55?

i absolutely agree. having what is effectively a pancake kit zoom makes the k-01 much more exiting. i don't think that many entry level users are looking for a 40mm pancake, and a zoom is much more attractive.

Other mirrorless cameras such as the panasonic lumixs have lenses with very bad barrel distortion, but this is corrected with out a user even knowing. i don't see this as a problem for most users.

This is exactly what pentax should have released with the k-01 as a kit, and for me it makes k-mount mirrorless make a lot more sense.

well done pentax

Actually very interesting news

If they do come out with a lens to take advantage of the rear element in the mirror box, I hope it would be the first of many. Think of all the possibilities, all the pancakey lenses they can build. Even those with sdm in them......

Even if the new lens doesn't fit the other Pentax cameras. I'm fine with it. You can't have everything. (Yes you know to whom I'm referring to)

Actually I think it is quite impossible to be longer than Nex with their 18-55

exactly my thoughts, this should've been the other option of the kit lenses, with a outer design, like the 40XS, to match the camera. I mean, the camera looks nice with it, but not with the DAL 18-55. And people will mostly choose this camera for the look, as I think was the main goal. And new users might don't mind the slow 6.7 aperture at the tele end, as the capabilities of the K01 in high ISO is solid, and the DOF of half stop more of the 18-55's 5.6 at the tele end isn't much different.

I like the shades of green and orange; but I'm having trouble getting my pinhole correct in order to use it on my camera.

I think so too. In my opinion the target for K-01 is the Canon G1X. But it need a collapsible zoom lens so that the size remains contained.

Compare Canon G1X and K-01 dimensions side by side

This zoom could turn the K-01 into a very interesting "large pocket" camera.

It's proprietary so you cannot test for it
AFAIK, it's corrected in RAW processing, so if you don't shoot JPEG, you can process images without correction and test for it, just like photozone does.

This seems to be the trend of the future and the idea is to focus on sharpness and let distortion and CA be corrected in software. It's always easier to optimize a single parameter than a bunch. Correction of distortion and CA can lose some sharpness in the borders, but if that is high to start with, the result will still come all right. And I imagine that not worrying about these issues can also simplify the optical design by eliminating the need for corrective elements.

So this lens would have to be significantly sharper than the current kit lens, but if that is not the case, I don't know what its point is.

Can the inside of K-01 take 1.5cm of protrusion without touching the mirror(I am kidding about the last part of the sentence - lol)?

I think this will be a new release later some time... the 18-55 range is the "basic" kit FL range right?
