If you don't work in 16-bit, why do you have a DSLR? There's a significant difference. Doesn't the Pentax software give you 16-bit? If not (I have no idea), switch to Linux.
I'm 24 bit at home.. Well, the display is 24bit - the OS is 64 bit - Aperture is 24 bit and the Gimp is 24 bit as well as the printer is 24 bits.. But, I work in whatever the K10D gives me..

Your '24 bit' display is actually 8 bit (8 bits per colour channel x 3 colour channels). 16 bit images are '48-bit' when counted that way. The OS's 'bit depth' is utterly irrelevant (it really only determines the max RAM the OS can handle, 32 Bit OS's top out at 4GB).

I'm going to wait to see a complete evaluation of the K20D from Ricehigh before I make my decision to purchase one of them.

Rougly translated. That means.

If Ricehigh doesn't like it, or finds problems with it, I will then rush right out and buy one.
I'm surprised it took us 7 pages to crack a RH joke. But it was worth the wait!

The 1.7x TC is not an AF teleconverter, it is an AF assister, if that makes any sense. What you do is hook up a MF lens to it, hook the combo to your AF body, and then when you want to focus you have to manually focus the lens until you're close to correct focus, at which point the TC will adjust its lenses to attain correct focus. So, you do about 98% of the focusing, then the TC puts the icing on the focus cake with the last 2%.

Oh, and good luck finding one for less than $350.
It is not supposed to be used that way, although I agree everybody does, in fact.
