Looks Like Rumors Of A New Flash Are True

This past weekend my AF-540FGZ flash overheated, melted and deformed its housing, and leaked clear fluid on the ground (the Eneloops powering it are fine though).

I went to the C.R.I.S. Camera Services web site to check on the repair cost (my flash is out of warranty). Filling out their on-line Repair Quote form generates a notice to the consumer:

"Limited service life:
The manufacturer of this item has indicated that certain parts are no longer in stock and are not being remanufactured. ..."

This indicates the Pentax top-of-the-line flash is no longer be manufactured. The rumored flash will probably be its replacement. I hope it's weather sealed and built to the same standards as the K-5.

Where else have we heard that there will be a new flash?

Also, what are they going to do now that your flash isn't supported any longer?

There was a rumour - I think it was with that Hong Kong FF posting via Rice High - about a new body and a new flash.

Long overdue. The Pentax flash system is very dated.

Unfortunately if it was combined with an FF rumor than you might as well start looking at some Metz flashes...

New flash would be FANTASTIC! Awesome wireless triggering like Nikon system would rock! But then again, so would a camera with a flash sync of 1/250

I'll hope that the new flashes will be next to wheater sealed also running on the D-Li90 battery pack, since that is a very powerfull battery.

Flashes that run on the D-Li90 would be nice (it would be nice if all the cameras ran on that battery)

Yep, that would make it great for us. You can just pick up every Pentax product and put in one of your battery's where you can invest on having some spares for holiday or when working with your gear.

I'd like to see what Pentax can do to upgrade their flash system.

I've used Nikon flash systems and found them really effective, whereas Pentax seems "good enough to get the job done". I think some clever metering may be involved, as well as finely adjustable flash output. Maybe.

I'm just saying there is room for improvement.

Speak for yourself! On the other hand, I've always struggled to see what the recent Pentax flashes have offered over the Metz range, aside from being more expensive.

I've e-mailed C.R.I.S. about it and their reply was "From your description, this is not something we have seen or heard of before and would suggest that you send in the units for a free evaluation."

The flash was being powered by the TR Power Pack-3 at the time. The Power Pack is under warranty, the flash is not. I'm hoping that there was a problem with the Power Pack that caused the problem with the flash, and they'll repair both under the Power Pack warranty. I do a lot of hoping some times...

I have trouble getting parts for my 1953 Studebaker but I'm not counting on a new model hitting the dealerships any time soon ....
