The way I see it this camera is cheaper than the 40D and the D300 and this sensor sounds like it will blow the others away, so I think that 1299 is fair. If it does what it says it does, I'll pay it.

Am I the only one kinda let down by the K200D? The K20D on the other hand, hot damn. the 20fps at 1.6mp kinda blows though.

sounds awesome Chris,

thanks for the in depth review.
I'm in a fortunate place where I am getting close to upgrading my *ist DS body. This beastie will definitely be on my shopping list.

I am with you as well. At the least I was hopeing to see it along with the Oly on the liveview. In that class it would have made that camera a very hot seller. I believe people would have dropped Canon XT and XTI for that feature alone since it would be in the same price range. Once you got people to looking at it then the market would go through the roof on the optics once the sheep learned of the shake reduction. Perhaps Chric doen't know much about the 200 yet since the 20 day seems to be in the spot light.

I've handled both and will do my best to go over the reasoning in the K200D as well. I'm a little off by it as well and I understand their personal reasonings and heck the weather sealing was a surprise, but I feel it needs more to compete in the just above entry level market.

Well I guess it saves me $800 from wanting to upgrade my K100. But this begs the question. Aside for live view, why not just get a k10?

It's exactly the same viewfinder as the K10D and yes it is big and bright!
I recall you pointing out an 'active device' between the projected image from the lens to the eye in one of the many Patents you posted. Nothing rolled out with this camera from that patent then?

Thanx for the prompt posting. I look forward to sitting down and reading it all later.

Smaller body, the ability to reuse your AA batteries and to say you have the latest toy in the market!
I just checked the price on the k10D at bhphoto and they are selling it for $599 after rebate for the body.

Well I think, that the K20D is more a concurrent of the be introduced D90 and maybe also a bit the Canon 40D but the 40D is a camera in an other class.

The K10D were also not a 1-1 comparable with the 30D.
Canon's 30D and 40D have a magnesium body more rugged faster AF(even the 30D) much faster FPS(even the 30D, let's don't talk about the 40D).

The Nikon D300 isn't really a concurrent for the K20D, the D300 is a camera with a much more robust body, a much better AF system. The max shutter speed of course twice as much, and flash sync also much higher. FPS speed is also much higher even without the extra battery grip(which is more advanced as the K10D/K20D grip with more buttons more place for batteries), let alone with the extra battery grip.

So no...the K20D is not really a worry for 'Nikon and 'Canon sales of their D300 and 40D.

But the K20D will be a success story for Pentax, I hope so. Not everybody needs a better AF system and more FPS and a more robust body and a higher flash sync speed
Many of the shooters just need LOW noise on high ISO's and a very good IQ But we don't know if that's the case without full size RAW files

The only reason I am not pulling the trigger just this second is to see some sort of review on it for the ease of use factor. I know some are going to cringe when I say this and will tell me to just go get a point and shoot but I would like a camera that my wife can learn over time but just be able to simply pick up and start firing when she needs to. My time will soon be limited and in a way I wish I would have gotten the K10D a month ago when I was thinking about it but I was holding out on the new models to see if the liveview would have come with the 200 model. If it would have and in the 700 range I would have been all over it. Since it is not the K10d for $484 after MIR is looking hot right now. I just don't know if it will be harder to learn than the 200. That will be the only selling point as of right now. If it is about the same on the learning curve then K10D it will be.

Thanks for the great description Chris.

I shoot HDR panoramas. I use PTGui to stitch these panoramas. It needs each set of images to be shot with the same f-stop with varying shutter speeds. I want to shoot in manual mode with auto bracketing for speed reasons. My K10D will do that but it changes both the shutter speed and f-stop. Will the K20D shoot in manual mode with auto bracketing but only vary the shutter speed? If not, this needs to be pointed out to Pentax for a future firmware update.

Thanks,
Larry from Prescott
