I am using both SDM lenses and my earlier power zoom lenses, and they both work fine. With the latter you have the basic power zoom function i.e. motorised zoom, but no image tracking or other power zoom special features. This was the case already with earlier firmware versions.
Correct, works on the K20D as well and I would suspect any body film or digital introduced after the PZ series. Powered zoom works, but you don't get the Extended Power Zoom Functions: Zoom-Clip, Image Size Tracking, Auto Zoom Effect

Camera manual

Take a looks at Kim Coxon's Pentax-Manuals web site. He has manual for the Z-1 which is the same as the US PZ-1, Pentax Manuals. He also has some lens manuals on the accessories page, Pentax Manuals. The SMC PENTAX-FA LENSES 8/03 manual includes a few pages on the Power Zoom.

Speaking of.... does anyone have an extra copy of either the PZ-1 or 28-105 operators manual?
All I have is a poor quality PDF scan of the camera manual.

hehe, well the PDF is readable, but I just like "books".

On a related note though... I just realized that the zoom ring on the 28-105 (power zoom version) slides so you can use it like a "real" zoom! I was outside last weekend and juggling the PZ-1/28-105 and a 1yo and heard/felt a *click* and low and behold the zoom ring spun.
Thank you, thank you. Thanks to your post I just realised that the same is true for the 28-80 version. I thought I had bought a dud lense stuck at 48mm. You have made my night.

Cheers!

Although I am not kskjon:

FA* 28-70, FA* 80-200, FA 28-105 PZ, FA 100-300 PZ on K10D and K20D: motorized zooming is possible.

The two power zoom contacts are nowadays reused as "energy supply" for the SDM drive. Thus, although SDM lenses might have the energy necessary to focus on an "analog" body like the (P)Z-1P, the corresponding AF signals from the camera are missing.
