$300 might sound expensive for a pouch if you're used to buying $2 products on eBay and then complain about the quality. I can't judge if this is overpriced or not because I don't know where and how it's made.

Let's say that Pentax doesn't get them made by people who make $3 a day and it's completely made by hand in a country outside of China/Vietnam/Philippines... You might be able to justify a large chunk of the cost that way and the rest is the name/stamp that's put on it.

I know that these things can be horribly under-valued because of the vast range of junky leather products from certain countries. Good for you, if you like those...

I love the kind of leather they seem to have picked for this one (it's extremely soft and durable... don't mistake it for the garbage they use for lens pouches!)

Let's face it, Pentax is a lot about value-for-money and not about quality. Most Pentaxians seem to look at the price first (and then complain about the lack of quality control of a camera/lens which cost 50% less than the competition).

Having said that... Will I buy one? No. I do my own leather work and I'm currently working on my second half case for the K-01 which I won't sell because it would probably cost more than the camera that it holds.

And maybe this is a cheap product made in Asia... But we don't know, do we?

My k-5 was decidedly more expensive than a D7000, and my lenses (slow primes) trend towards more expensive as well.

Crap.

The week I finally sell off the last of my Pentax DLR gear, and Pentax releases this sweet piece of kit.

Did I make a mistake?

Should I come back into the fold?

Pentax, you slay me.

Where have you heard that?

Does anyone else think the use of leather for the pouch is discordant with the absence of any (faux-) leather on the camera?

You come along with your expensive leathery leather pouch and then out you pull something that shouts "rubber toy"?

OK.

That misses the mark by something close to 180 degrees.

I think it is easier to pull a fast one from Leica shooters, as they are not exactly budget conscious, more or less. If Leica can get their fanboys to drop $8,000 for a camera that only shoots in black and white, just about anything is possible, really.

But, I hear that the price of K-01 is fast approaching $400. Did they in the right mind really think that people would pay almost just as much for the pouch as the camera itself?

Insanity at its finest.

I tried one in a camera store a few days ago. Rubber toy it is not. It's a solid little beast.

Hmm, my experience is rather different than this. The top reason I bought my K200D is that the build quality was *much* higher than offerings from the other brands. The second reason was the useability factor - again an important quality measure. And lens purchases since then, SMC Takumar, DA40 and DA15 (in the mail now!) were all quality driven purchases.

My experience too with the K-x and now the K-5. The price issue has become more contentious lately because of PRIC's insisting on price controls and the subsequent huge jump in price for lenses. Prior to that you didn't hear the complaints and posts about price.

ya you sure know a ton about leather... not a camera pouch dude... I'm sure just like any one else on here who has bought premium pentax leather knows pentax uses shit leather and bumps the price up. The pentax Q leather case were the same thing, super high price supposed to be premium leather and they were shit compared to even the cheap chinese cases you get on ebay. That leather will crackle and fall apart overtime just like all pentax premium leather. I own multiple leather jackets, I own wotancraft bags, I own gordy and barton1972 straps, redwing heritage boots, just tons of tons of leather, if I was a porn star that'd be my niche. Pentax is bottom of the barrel leather, like pretty much all camera companies, you want a good leather case make your own or wait for one of the epic case makers online to get to the K-01... And that much leather would not cost that much, even hand stitched... Your paying %100 for a marc newson stamp that isnt even red, at least we got a red one on the K-01...

Rubber toy? Have you had your hands on one? How many shots have you taken with the K-01?

All reports are totally opposite to what this says.

One by one serious photographers are trying this little gem - and guess what? They like it for what it is. Sure, there are issues and I agree - with the real ones.

There are a few full-time pro shooters here - highly-regarded members - who have tried the K-01 and posted recently about the good handling, great IQ, decent AF, focus peaking and decent video. Some naysayers will never be convinced. OK, fine.

Too bad they ruined the camera for Pentax, though.

Like it or not, it *does* shout 'rubber toy', at least in my opinion. The poster who said it shouted 'rubber toy' didn't say it was a rubber toy. The poster was saying it had the appearance of a rubber toy to onlookers.

I don't care what a camera looks like and I think it can and is a serious tool. However this is a "serious" bag for what many interpret to be a non-serious look-ing camera.

Perhaps I'm wrong. I'm certainly not an expert in fashion, and maybe the fashionistas think it's an awesome non-toy-looking-camera.
