On the sample that Ben posted, thanks Ben, I can see some strange vertical lines. Is that supposed to happen?

Thanks, keep 'em coming, and wait-n-see...

To everyone who's been posting K20D pictures (lol101, Benjikan, everyone!) on the fora these past few days–thankyouthankyouthankyou! You serve your community well and it is instructive to study these images. Please, everyone who gets the chance to shoot samples of the K20D, please continue to post, even if some members grump that they're not happy with the camera or what it can do. I appreciate learning what I can about this forthcoming Pentax, while keeping in mind that these early photos are being created on pre-production firmware and what ships won't be the last word in firmware, either. The future will be interesting, I'm sure; wait and see!

samples from greek forum

some k20d samples from a Greek fellow with nickname “motorrad” initially posted via the Greek pentax forum PentaxCafe.gr

I know they are resized samples but they might help. He has also promised to post some samples with 1/25s and ISO 400,800 and 1600…

some more 100% cropped ones at various ISOs. Original post from the same member.

I can live with this 6400 ISO ...

Noiseware Pro (chroma) - Resize 50% - Resize 50% - USM .5 @ 80

PhotoME version: 0.79 (Build 612)

Here's a 100% crop of the original after 1 pass through NoiseWare Pro. No other processing.

Hi Rickster, thanks for your work in posting. I'm very surprised at the quality at Iso 6400. I just liked that it was there, since I would then be able to for sure find use of 3200. But this looks really promising.

Iíll also echo what christinelandon wrote; we know that it is early firmware and beta-camera model, but thanks to everyone for taking the time in posting the images.

Amateur Photographer have done a brief test before the full test in a few weeks, and already that they are impressed with the noise quality at ISO6400. to quote AP "Noise is well controlled on the image taken at 6400ISO".

It will be interesting to read the full test in a few weeks, but its looking good.

Remember the test was taken without any firmware included.

I am so pumped about this camera! I have been coveting the K10D for the last year now. And now here's the K20D, with all the features I want from the K10D, plus this awsome, crazy, make yer eyes pop sensor. Woot! What do the kids say these days? "Its Sick!!" something like that.

The quality at 6400 its just nuts. Then run it through your favourite noise reduction? WOW!

Does anyone here remember ISO 1600 film? If I get around to it I might post a scan of Ilford 1600 pushed to 3200. Talk about grain/noise and "mood". But to have 6400 look what I would expect to pass for ISO 800? Ok, i might have lower expectations.... But really! This is just unreal!

I am saving my loonies to buy that new body! Then when the K2D is anounced, I'll have a new body to cast my lusty desires at.

I can hardly wait to see how those C*non sponsered review sites "explain away" this new sensor!

Eric.

"Given the excellent image quality and usable ISO6400, it's a shame the K20D is unable to offer a much needed fast AF and at least 5 fps. In our test the camera had problems locking on anything but static subject (in low light this could be a real problem), and the AF-C is useless.
The image quality doesn't matter anymore if you can't capture the picture, and we hope Pentax will fix this issue in a future model. However, we are so impressed with the new sensor that we'll give the K20D a Highly Recommended (just) rating."
Something like that. Or they'll complain about soft jpegs

If this theory were true, then more megapixels would always automatically equate to less noisy prints at the same size. This is clearly not the case.
This is not what I said. I said that resampling an image to a smaller size will make the image look less noisy at a 100% crop. Like if it were taken at a lower ISO setting. It is simple statistics. Of course, using a sensor with more and smaller pixels will make the image noisier in the first place and both effects will cancel out if everything else staid the same.

That's odd. My Firefox (v2.0.0.11) shows the K10D shot on top.

Your version of Firefox also changed your sig so it says "advise" instead of "advice."
My Firefox is exactly the same, showing it the way Laurent/lol101 had listed it
