To be fair that is a 1.4 and the Pentax is a 1.8, among other differences. A closer comparison would be this Canon 50/1.8
Amazon.com: Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II Camera Lens: Electronics
that sells for $108.

Please dude don't confuse yourself and others. Canon EF 50 F1.4 is like USD 370ish, and its opponent is Pentax FA 50 1.4, which probably the similar price.
And this one....the DA 50's opponent is EF 1.8, which is 107 for brand new, and 80~90 for a used one.

PENTAX please tell me your secret market policy so that I can support you $150 more for a plastic lens!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm pretty outraged (though unnecessary) about this stupid move.
My message was confusing.

I did not intend to compare f/1.4 lens prices with f/1.8 ones. I just wanted to point out that new versions of lenses seem to be much more expensive than the previous ones.

Some people here are complaining about the price of the DA 50mm f/1.8. What will Canon users say if the current EF 50mm f/1.4, which one can buy for less than US$ 400, is replaced by a US$ 850 EF 50mm f/1.4 II?...

Ah, I see. Thanks for the clarification.

Agreed. Too expensive. Just a few years ago the FA 50 was the same price... Not impressed.

Sorry, I'm actually mad at this.

Why are people swallowing this bullshit? At around 100-150$ why not. In Sweden it's 2595kr that's 372.467 USD (with tax) for a fu***** entry level plastic lens.

Who want to pay 2595kr (372$) for the pentax lens when the Canon EF 50/1,8 II sells for 890kr (127$) with tax? This is bullshit. Sorry, but this is just bullshit. Let's pay 3 times the price just because it's pentax...

Luckily I got a SMC Takumar 55 1,8 for around 20$ today and going by how my non smc 55 performs, its probably going to beat the crap out of that overpriced plastic thing.
I feel the same - the prices are waaay over the top here in Europe.
I will pick it up on a planned trip to the US in fall/winter though

An EF 500mm f/1.4 would definitely be a joke. A heavy one even .

But what if lens prices follow the trend set up by the recently released new versions of Canon and Nikon lens (think for instance "EF 24-70mm f/2.8 II)?

Knowledgeably inadequate question: Outside of just being able to buy it and have it immediately, What would be the pros of getting this lens over a used, but clean F or FA 50mm 1.7?

Given the stellar IQ of the 35/2.4, I'd say the IQ of the 50/1.8 will be a marvel to behold, even above the pre-digital AF fast-fifties.
This is not a very expensive lens for what it is, and its IQ will no doubt impress - I'm sure there will start to be comparisons between this lens and the FA 43/1.9 ...

I certainly am hoping you are right! If the 35/2.4 were all metal with the same optics (which are what really matter) people would rave about it. I'd love to see them do an 18mm like the 35 too.

So this is about 75mm equivalent? I really want a good 50mm equivalent. I have a Super Tak 28.mm 2.5 (about 42mm equivalent) right now that is an excellent lens - I just hate dealing with the adapter ring.

EDIT: I'm being an idiot - the Super Tak is full frame, so it's an 18.6mm equivalent! I have a full-frame Tamron 70-210 that is 46mm equivalent at the wide end.

EDIT AGAIN: As far as plastic goes, the old manual lenses rule! All-metal and glass! My Tamron is like something you would attach to the end of a rifle barrel - and it's stupid long compared to modern lenses - but has very sharp optics.

The DA 35/2.4 is a 52.5mm equivalent and an excellent lens for around $169-179 BNIB. As I said, it's the Rodney Dangerfield of Pentax lenses because its not got a metal mount but its sharp, good colors, etc.

I can see the worry that forum members have about paying all that money for a lens that is made out of plastic. But what isn't made out of plastic these days? The only way I see it, for a company like Pentax is that weight for weight, plastic is a cheaper choice. And to sell these cheaper lenses and still make a profit and also keep the prices competitive, this is the path they are taking.Optically, the glass inside the plastic will hopefully make everyone who decides to purchase this lens forget about the plastic holding it together.

Nobody has answered my earlier question as to what exactly is wrong with plastic mounts. I really don't get it, and somebody needs to explain the hate.
