I doubt the veracity of a $2800 price point. with a 24mp sensor it would have to have a lot the D800 doesn't offer for what by then will be about the same price. I think odds are much better it will launch in the 2-2200 range. If the D600 rumouris true at 1600 then the pentax will launch under $200 but at a higher price with more feature content and better build IMO (though Nikon may well still be better for flash and I imagine AF will be a closer race with a new AF system on the Pentax)
The Canon likely will under-perform as a sensor versus the Sony sensor that will end in Pentax (and a 5D3 is what $3400 right now)
Nikon of course will require all new lenses where some of the Pentax will work with canon via adapter

Even if the MSRP is $2800 when Pentax releases a FF it won't hold that level for long. Look at the price trends for the K-30 and other bodies released. You'll get the mass retailers (e.g., Amazon, B&H, Adorama) selling at a lower price within a few weeks and the price will continue to drop.

I'd be really surprised to see it as low as 2-2200 at launch because of electronics fall-off price trends.

a year ago i would have easily believed the 2800 @ 24mp rumour for FF. but the game seems to be changing and the competative marketplace will set the price as much as pentax will. it is rumoured both canon and nikon will announce sub $2000 FF in the next 6 weeks (Nikon first then Canon post Photokina) and the new Sony is also rumored at 1999. For Pentax to launch at 2800 it would almost need to be a D4 feature set because the D800 would slaughter it and so would to a lesser degree the 5D3. I don't think the head honchos at pentax ricoh are fools they can read the trends better than we can because they have more info than we do.

True, you can safely assume they've known the specs of those new cameras by Nikon and Canon for quite a while.

or at least have some very educated guesses based on info leaking form beta testers etc
sensor info if the Nikon is Sony is likely easily available to them as a potential client
Canon info may well be available through the Fuyo Group keiretsu which suprisingly Both Canon and Ricoh are a part of. Keiritsu is not as powerful as it was in the 90's and earlier but it is still a strong factor in japanese business and the vertical groups develop parts supply chains.
the fact that pentax and nikon both use sony sensors though shows the keiritsu isn't what it once was since all 3 belong to a different group

Somewhat remotely possible, but also one really has to wonder what's happened with properly marketing a majority of their items; with perhaps the exception of the K30.

Sony did the full frame A900 for about 25k, yet I could never see A Pentax FF coming in at under 2400

Me neither, but... Let me display some wishful thinking:

Ricoh sells their mutifunctional printers at a slight loss, the profit is made with selling the supplies or the supply/service contracts. Hopefully, they come up with something similarly smart for their FF body.

Of course an FF body doesn't need supplies. So selling at a loss wouldn't do any good. It does need good lenses to go with it though. A very good FF body that is under the competitors prices will get their foot in the door. The real profit can then be made with the excellent lenses they can market and sell afterwards. And the new pro grade flash units that they're going to develop.

A900 was a long time back. this new round of sensors if the price rumours are all corret will be game changers. pentax will really have no choice but to move into that price territory. they aren't leica they can't just go do something whacky like the MM (which i really really want) because they are still a mainstream company. Canikon if they decide to market below $2000 (and it seems pretty likely) will set the market tone and price. Pentax can move around the zone and represent value through better/different features but they can't ignore the elephant in the room and still expect to sell volumes which i'm sure is the goal (leica's goal is never volumes)

46MP?? lol 3D.. but not actually 3D. I wouldn't be surprised if the 46MP claim is like Sigma did with its Foevon sensor you know, 3D as in 'records 3 colours'?

Nope you don't get a system at $2800. Like Kunzite said, barely an FF. A body at most... and looking at your kit (DA* 50-135, DA 12-24, FA50 f1.4, Tamron 17-50 f2.8), that's already a mighty impressive lens lineup that can convince me to stay Pentax even if somebody offered me a 1Dx body for free, to make me switch. But then again, I have my reasons
I have to update my signature line! LOL, my 50-135 is getting the HSM motor replaced for a second time, my FA 50f1.4 has stopped focusing to infinity, and my DA*55 is going in for an HSM Motor when I get the 50-135 back.. At that point I may dump it all due to how unreliable my Pentax gear has been... Kx was in twice, Kr twice...

They can switch the supersonic motor from Pentax SDM to Sigma HSM nowadays? That's a definite improvement!

I sometimes feel like giving a similar reply in the troubleshooting forum when people start threads about how their KX won't autofocus anymore.
