There are already two threads discussing this here:

https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/pentax-slr-lens-discussion/19632-new-pent...s-roadmap.html

https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/pentax-news-rumors/19615-pentax-show-upco...w-roadmap.html

Maybe they should be merged?

DA* 30...i have an M42 lens of this focal, and it's the best thing for an APS-C sensor, very flexible for everyday use...with "star" level optics and SDM it will be LBA-addicteds new toy for sure!

If your M42 30mm is the same as the K30/2.8 it is defenitely a VERY VERY good lens.
I love it.

Uh oh.. that means they will discontinue the 31mm Limited soon.

What is this "rear converter for sdm"?

Is this a sdm motor for non sdm lenses?

They din't discontinue the FA 77 when they introduced the DA 70 Limited.
The FA 31 Limited will be sold as long as they make a profit on it.

No, "rear converter" is Pentax name for teleconverter.
So "SDM rear converter" means teleconverter with SDM, that works with SDM.
Pentax current rear converters are only KA-mount, not KAF (not autofocus).

I would simply dtake it to mean what it says--- a rear converter that works with SDM.
if you take any of the converters that have been around and stick an SDM lens on them
(on a K10 where the SDM is active), the AF becomes very baffled. (goes berzerk)

on edit: the pentax ones don't do AF at all, and dthe 3rd party one throw up as noted because they want to turn the cam which isn't how you focus an SDM lens.

what is needed is a converter that intelligently works with SDM and preserves the SDM functions.---and that seems to be what is promised. If Pentax is really clever they will produce in in such a way that it does AF for non-SDM lenses as well, and has enough brains in it to tell the camera what it has done to the focal length of the lens, so the Shake reduction isn't baffled as well, and the focal length is recorded correctly in the photo data section.

Just saw that, thanks! In my little opinion, that is a big loss on the side of Pentax - fast glass, fast focusing and far reaching is a big reason for many DSLR shooters opt for the other two major brands of cameras

To be clear, Sigma announced that they'll be making them in Pentax mount too.

And may I add,

Good GRIEF!

This would be the only lens capable of taking a low light portrait of bigfoot. This may lure him out. Either him or the military! This thing looks like a military lens. I don't think you'd be able to use this lens around the public at all.

Honestly though, this is a GREAT feat from Sigma. This one will win lens of the year hands down. The 400-1000 telelconverter is a great addition.

You're probably right, but I wonder. Since the introduction of the SDM lenses, I've thought it odd that Pentax would continue to develop a redundant system: motors in cameras and just some of the lenses. Sounds expensive to me, but what do I know? Still, were I to bet long term - all new lens designs will have SDM, cameras won't have internal motors and the company will offer a handy little motor-equipped converter to allow use of older AF lenses.
