The Pentax DA 560/5.6 will indeed be collapsible...I think...

A recently filed Pentax patent makes this highly likely and explains the photo below. The english is badly translated but the meaning is clear.

"Pentax applied for a patent about a division-type lens body tube. It is hard to carry the super tele-photo lens, but it will be easy to carry it if degradable.

Patent Publication No. 2011-22280
published 2011/02/03
filled 2009/07/14
A division-type lens
It is struct of a lens group and an extension tube
It will be easy to carry
A lens group
It has lense
It has focus mechanism
An extension tube
It lets communication of a body link a lens
A lever opens and closes a diaphragm
It does not have a lens

I could be wrong, but I think the last (shortest) of the three lens photos was photoshopped by a member.

When one of our reps was at CP+, he couldn't tell whether or not this lens was collapsible based on what he saw. My personal hunch is that the last sliding piece on the lens is just a hood, but I guess we will have to wait and see. An APS-C 560mm F5.6 lens technically doesn't need to be all that long...though I could understand such a system were employed on something like a 600mm F4.

I believe the middle photo just show a collapsed lens hood....
Even if it is photoshopped I believe it illustrates what the lens do...

What's curious is that there's a mark on the 3rd segment of the lens (going from left to right), which might suggest that it indeed collapses. Being a dummy model, though, I wouldn't expect there to be enough wear-and-tear on it to warrant that mark, however, so it's more likely that they're going to put something else there, like a strap lug or switch.

Other pictures have show two dots on the lens tubus. The frontmost screw is unlikely for the hood and is most likely the collaps lock....

Judging from the pictures the 560mm collapsed will only be about twice the lenght of the 50-135. Thats amazing!

Those mockups were not real. If so, Pentax could have released the lens by now .

It is supposed to be shown at Photokina. I doubt the mock-ups don't reflect the real thing. If so, they wouldn't have shown it...

Oh, really? That's historically inaccurate .

No, usually companies have several different prototypes floating around.

Well being collapsable was very obvious at the start I think. Still wonder how that lens turns out!

Well it could be collapsable or it could be a dual focal length lens. A 400mm f4 or a 560mm f5.6.

The rear section has a very large section with a knob on it. Is this for a filter drawer or a built in teleconverter?

And what are the two switches on the side of the lens. It could be an SDM lens in which case one switch is the AF/MF switch but what could the other switch be for?

Regards

Chris

Optically, I don't like the idea of collapsible. Unless the build quality is exemplary, there seems too much scope for front element wiggle and misalignment, to the possible detriment of IQ.

I'm taking my K-5 with FA50/2.8 macro to Photokina in a month or so. I hope they will show the 560. If so I'll make sure to get as many detailed pictures as possible. If Pentax hasn't released a press release revealing all details before that of course...

It never will be 400mm/f4! The frontlens is never big enough to catch the fotons. But maybe it will be two lengths, but then 400mm/f5.6 or the longer one 800mm/f8.
