My hypothesis is that the most revolutionary thing about this lens will be the price. As far as quality suffering because of that, I don't know enough about astro optics to speak to it, but the murmurs are maybe starting to suggest that there have been some concessions on the close-focusing side (if it's quality, or just an unremarkable close-focusing distance...well, we're near enough to the announcement that I don't care to speculate). At least that's how I read 'particularly good at long focusing distances', or however it was worded.

Though generally simpler lenses, if you can get away with them, are better lenses (look at enlarging optics).
It supposedly has a 7/6 optical arrangement with 2 ED elements.

I tested a copy once. The DA*300 tested better at 4+. The 300/2.8 was a dog compared to the 500 f/4.5.

Perhaps it was just that one copy.

Well DPReview has it (the 560mm) at $7000.

Which, in my largely objective opinion, is a [expletive] joke.

For the record I don't know if you're laughing with me or at me, but it's all the same to me.

Given he FA* 600/4 was going for $8500 not that long ago, it is a shock. I guess it will come down some. But still sticker shock . However, we need to see how it performs. Maybe it only has the WR status because it can walk on water.

Compared to 4m for the Sigma 500, 3.7m for the Canon 500, 4.5m for the Canon 600, 5m for the Nikon 600...

Noticeable, but it could have been far worse, given the [apparent] heritage of the 560 in astronomical designs

Seriously though, why buy a 500mm f4 IS lens for $10 000 (or, ahem $7000) when you could have a much larger lens, with a fraction of the aftermarket service infrastructure, which doesn't have any pesky professional bodies to mount it on (at least that it will autofocus on, for you "Pentax full framers"), based on a $1000 telescope, and a whole extra stop of depth of field for, um, $7000.

Maybe it's really good. On paper it's dumb dumb dumb.

Also "HD" will soon sound as impressive as "480p". Look ahead, PRICs.

The HD PENTAX-DA 560mm F5.6 ED AW DC extreme telephoto lens has been was initially announced at the CP+ tradeshow in February, 2012 and officially announced in September, 2012 at Photokina. It will go on sale in Q4, 2012.

This lens is designed for the APS-C sensor format. With a modest maximum aperture of 5.6 it promises to be relatively affordable and convenient to carry around.

The lens is optimized for rendering distant subjects particularly sharp and well-defined. The DA 560mm is based on optics used in astronomical telescopes. Contrary to popular belief, the lens is not collapsible (it does feature a built-in retractable hood, however).

The lens is designed for all-weather use (AW) incorporating a total of 29 seals to protect the innards of the lens. It has a built-in filter holder at the rear taking 40.5mm filters. A circular polarizer filter is available which can be rotated without removing the filter from the lens.

The lens has a built-in DC autofocus motor and features Quick-shift which allows the photographer to manually fine tune focus without switching out of autofocus mode.. On cameras with no support for in-lens autofocus motors (*istD series, K100D and K110D) the lens works as a manual focus lens.

This lens features Pentax HD coating, the next generation of multi-coating (supersedes SMC coating).
From the PF entry. Hopefully their definition of relatively affordable is accurate.

No, I am assuming that simpler optical designs should be sold for less.
and that's a bad assumption

The main thing that determine the price of a lens is how difficult is it to be build (i.e.: more elements to assemble, usualy mean more hours to build the lens) and ... the weight of the glass inside : 1kg of raw optical glass cost $1000, and considering that this raw glass is cut then polished, we can do the correct assumption that when an lens has 1kg of optical glass in it, it needed more than this kilo at the begining to build the whole elements.

Perhaps you took 'lens speed' to refer to autofocus speed. In this case I was using speed to refer to lens aperture, which is on the record for the Pentax as a super leasurely f5.6. Sorry for the confusion.
i did understand well in that case. And for a telephoto, a F5.6 isn't really slow.
