Pentax DA 560/5.6 expected at Photokina

This interesting short article repeats the belief that the upcoming 560 lens will be released at Photokina, and also explains why it will be so long:

Frankly, that post looks more like a regurgitation of what other sites (including us) have posted in the weeks following the CP+ show. It's certainly quite likely that we'll see the lens at the show, though

I really don't expect more than a proto-type(s) of the 560 to be available at the show. I doubt an actual release would occur before May.

What is the market for this lens, a birder who has ~$4k to spend on a lens, but not enough to use Canon or Nikon with their better AF and bigger selection of other long lenses?

Is the new telescope really generating very much excitement among the Pentax faithful?

Maybe the next step will be to work downwards from 560mm - ie a 400 f4.5, a 100-300 f4 zoom etc. That would be nice.

Don't worry, the typical escape clauses can be applied when it eventually comes out
ie. too expensive; got bugs; not comparable to CaNikon 500/4; Sigma 70-300 is as good and cheaper; does not make my coffee, etc

Yep
Excitement will shift to the 1.4 TC next year

Not for me - but then I am the kind of person who is happy with the Bigma (yes even at the long end!)

But a long prime may help attract buyers who may be thinking "well if I fancy a long prime in the future there is one, just like with Nikon, Canon and Sony" even if they never have a direct intention to buy it. FF would have a similar effect.

Personally I think a 400mm f/5.6 would have made more sense at this point though. Rejig the FA*. Or go for as light as possible with a short MFD prime to create a pseudo-macro capability in a walk around ultra-telephoto to appeal to as many people as possible.

IF it ever appears - it's almost had as a long a build up as the 645D!

Indeed. You would think that making a TC was rocket science or something.

Especially as Pentax has made a number in the past - including a unique (?) one that could AF with manual focus lenses.

Pentax would have been in a much stronger position now had it not discontinued all these elements that it is now trying to reintroduce - the telephoto lens and the tele-converter being the two highest profile examples.

Indeed again. A lot of the lens depth they once had should have been maintained, even at low build rates, and progressively updated, rather than just obsoleted.
