Wow. $7k. I was really hoping for it to come in around the $4k range. $5k at the upper limit as it's a DA lens and not a FF lens. At $7K, it's an heirloom lens that is out of my reach for a lens purchase - unless I was a working pro.

Kinda a sad day for me.

I hope the K3 comes in under $2500 USD.

The Sigma 300 f2.8 is looking better everyday.

$7k

bwah hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha

They're out of their minds. I just bought a 300-800 f/5.6 for thousands less. I'm glad I can get a D800 for "free".

Stupid.. maybe or not really.. just checked B&H Photo... the cheapest non-mirror non-T-mount 500mm+ lens is the Sigma 500mm f/4.5 for $4,999... cheaper than the Pentax 560mm, but definitely not weather sealed.

Next up from the competitors is a Nikkor 500mm f/4 for $7,999... Canon's offering is $10,499.... Sony's is $12,998...

So, the Pentax wins out in terms of relative affordability doesn't it?

This time Pentax did a really super dumb move !

Pricing the rebrand 18-270 so much more expensive than the Tammy, and i don't even speak about the 560mm.

I really hope for Pentax that they will do big discount for Christmas ...

Is it me, but i feel Pentax just shot a huge bullet in its foot ?

Going from a front element of 100mm (560/5.6) to a front element of 125mm (500/4) is quite a step; twice the amount of glass. Plus the Nikon probably has more elements and probably has stabilization, which should be in-lens at this focal length.

It's tough to argue with someone as to why Pentax is superior, when these pricing strategies are out there.

Yes, and that's why the Nikkor is more expensive.... and that's what Pentax didn't do to make a relatively affordable lens..

Or how about the Nikkor 500mm f4.0 VRII?

I am assuming that simpler optical designs should be sold for less.
and that's a bad assumption
...
The main thing that determine the price of a lens is how difficult is it to be build (i.e.: more elements to assemble, usualy mean more hours to build the lens)

Well DPReview has it (the 560mm) at $7000.

Which, in my largely objective opinion, is a [expletive] joke.
Joke? Thats what you could expect from a telephoto with 7 elements in six groups and two ED elements. I don't know of any first party 560mm (or comparable) lenses that are cheaper. The "telescopic" design gave the room for speculation of a cheaper construction with fever elements but the price estimates from some were ridiculous anyway as I have pointed out earlier.

Nikon 500mm f/4 at least deserves an honorable mention, albeit not cheaper, it's the same price and is far superior in terms of speed and is likely better in terms of optics.

You did mention several times about the price estimates being wrong, and you were correct.

Maybe we should start a time-share for the DA560.
I would probably use it 3-4 times a year.
So 3-4 weeks?
Say, 17 photographers could share it for the year.
So about $415 per person?
Anyone that wants to buy into the time-share has to buy someone else out!
Yep, count me in!

Maybe we should time share the $800 tamron lens they announced, too.

No, the Sigma 150-500 and 50-500mm will remain the favourite 500mm lens for Pentaxians, due to the sub $2k costs, other lenses with TC offer better bang for buck, and the Sigma 500 f/4.5 is amazing for the price, granted not quite as long or weathersealed, but faster and I'll bet sharper wide open, and also a bit cheaper 2nd hand.

Also why not a DA* designation?

I would certainly like to see some images from it wide open, but at that cost it won't be getting me away from my 50-500mm anytime soon.

This is a category above DA*. The AW is more WR than DA* supposedly, and I think the price confirms this is no DA*.

I think for $7k they also throw in a sherpa to carry the lens for you.
