No big magic required
The DxO for that sensor does work out OK relative to the K-5 (as does the DxO for the 24MP Nikon D3200).

So if the K-3 only offers performance that equals or marginally exceeds the K-5, just with more megapixels, that would still be pretty credible I suppose.

But a bit boring if compared to any budget 24MP FF's that might see the light of day at Photokina.

That is, if it really is that old sensor. Which I really really doubt.

Here comes the leaks *brings out the beer*

D600... no focus motor? hmm, like a semi-stripped-down D7000 with a 135format sensor...

but in any case... yeah there has been some indication of those "products" in line for announcement, even minor ones... perhaps Photokina is their release date.

BTW, speaking of release... has the DA 50 f1.8 arrived in most stores yet? It's September and apparently no sighting of it in Manila.

So far I've only seen a collection of previously known rumours from that site.
Meh.

Meh.
Perhaps that means the rumors were accurate, given that its a site that actually sells Pentax gear.

New low-end DSLR? The K-r has been discontinued for a few months, hasn't it?
There's got to be a low entry model...something lower than the K30...hopefully in the $500 range or lower. A cheap way to enter the Pentax DSLR line.

I'm very interested to see how these budget FFs do when they finally materialize. What specs will the D600 have when it is finally officially released? What will the price be for those specs? What will they leave out that won't be at first apparent to generate these cost savings? And will it really be worth the money when compared to a similarly priced APS-C camera like the Canon 7D? I imagine a lot of people will buy them when they first come out just because they'll feel like they're finally getting a deal on FF, but will this euphoria last?

For this reason, I would agree with you that for this reason the budget FF category will be the most interesting because it could potentially change the way the industry looks at FF cameras. And that could include, eventually, Pentax as well.

Pentax, ever since I've used them, has always been more conservative (sometimes frustratingly so), letting Canon and Nikon set the pace and then placing high quality cameras in the available niches, and the K-3 sounds like that may fit into that pattern perfectly-- coming out with a high end APS-C camera right when the big two may be focusing on different things. While I'm not excited about that in the way I would be for a truly daring product like a full frame camera or a budget medium format, if Pentax can put a lot of refined tech (better autofocus, improvements from K-30, and decent FPS) and tie it in with squeezing as much as they can out of the 24 MP Sony sensor, I think that could potentially be a very very good camera, with potentially beautiful prints at low ISOs.

Which uses the leaked D600 photo made on a wooden table as a product photo?
Are Nikon's product photography standards this low?
