Bottom line, is that for lenses with a wider focal length of 10mm or less, the information does not make it to the EXIF metadata where it can be utilized in post processing. I really don't care if its their lens or not. They - Pentax, can at least drop the information into the metadata - its no mean feat of software engineering. If they are going to play the game of - "its not our lens", so we will not support them in some fashion, is petty. If, that is their intention, then provide the users with a FULL and complete line of focal lengths and capabilities (shift, tilt/shift, doublers, complete line of Macro, ultra long telephoto, etc.), and do not essentially use third party lens offerings to round out their lens family - and then place phoney limitations on their use.

Am I missing something here? I have a K-7 and a Samyang Fisheye at 8mm. All the EXIF data (in the camera, in Lightroom, in PhotoMe and even in Windows Explorer) display the focal length as 8mm.

Afternoon Demp - On the Sigma 8-16, Pentax strips (or does not populate) the EXIF focal length field below 10mm. At 8mm its empty, zooming to 10mm it appears and is fine after that. I just assumed that it was that way for the other lenses too. So much for assuming anything. It would be nice to have it auto-populated as it is suppose to be in that Lightroom could apply the proper lens correction. I have no idea as to what the problem is - I just noticed this the other day..... PS - I am using a K5 body.

Are you aware of the fact that the focal lengths even for the Sigma are already written into the metadata?
You just run an exiftool command over your files in PP and then its also in the exifs.
Not perfect but an simple and fast solution.

If the Samyang fisheye actually works out of the box, then the issue real seems to rest with Sigma lens, not the body.
Thanks!!

Well if Pentax can equal or surpass the image quality of the Nex 7 then we may have something here. If however the image quality is anything like the D3200 on the Dpreview studio shots then lets hope as well for k5 super.

Very interesting.

The Samyang is a manual focus lens so I have to select the focal length in the menu. Since it shows in the menu to be selected and I get the focal length populated correctly in the files, I would assume that the camera system is capable of storing and transmitting less than 10mm numbers.

It sounds like a software error reading the data coming out of the Sigma lens as you zoom in and out and when the focal length changes from 2 digits to 1. It could be as much an issue with Pentax reading the data incorrectly, or Sigma transmitting incorrect format for single-digit focal lengths.

They better have a serious improvement on the QC this time around.
The K5 was applauded as the best APS-C camera when it came out, and I believe still is, but the quality control has been mediocre, at best.

Let's hope Pentax Ricoh has learned a lesson before they release whatever that K3 is supposed to be.

Is it Sigma that refused to pay for licensing on the various mounts? Maybe that explains the lack of support from Pentax? I've heard of stories of other Sigma lenses misreporting data.

I'd like to see...

K3 APS-C, 24mp as the successor to the K5
Next Gen 654D as Flagship.
Also keep making the existing 645D, with a big price adjustment to bring it somewhere between D800 and D4.

That would be a super interesting path for them to follow, they are already invested in MF sensors so its no inconcievable that they could do that. :P

That has to be around $4,999 or slightly lower to tease D800 users.... and even if it were to go that low, I doubt D800 wielders will yield.

Thanks, I guess the D600 isn't so-stripped-down after all (if everything were true), but if that was so, then what could this "entry-level 135" be priced at? $1,999? Another factor... "Nikon Rumors" sounds like "Pentax Forums", while I'm not an expert, maybe they're also being too optimistic I really doubt a price tag of $1,500 (same as K-5's intro price!)....

I'd be interested in knowing the sync speed of the flash?
180 is a deal breaker for me. Especially for there top end cameras.
My hopes are 250 and better AF.

If Canon does not come out with the 7Dll. I will wait till the smoke clears then I am in i think.
I am kinda excited.

D7000 launched with the kit lens at $1499.
If its just a D7000 with FF sensor, just for the sensor alone, it will be more expensive, not to mention RnD costs, newer processor and other added whiz bangs.
Its going to be at least $200-300 more than D7000. (also nearer to what a D700 is selling at )
This also gives price breathing space for a D7000/D300 aps-c replacement.

D800 is nowhere like 645D.
They are different formats, different uses and advantages.
Just pull out enough samples from the net to see that the 100% crop of the 645D (and other MFD camera) simply blows the D800 away in detail retention.
Not to mention that DOF for same FOV and FL used (and its associated characteristics like distortion, perspective) are different too.
D800 is just 'touted' as being like MF by Nikon marketing, using the 36mp as a half truth to sell this notion.

Maybe the K3 will have 24MP APSC with 12FPS and 102000 ISO and have a buffer and write speed to match the dual XQD card slot, and be able to shoot in crop mode like just about every other decent make out there?? There's always hope.... ))
