I'd shoot you, but then I'll have to tell you... or was it the other way around?

I was sure hoping for a different sensor than the 24 sony. It's not as good as the 16 thats is in the K-5 now.
Check DXOMark results for these three cameras, NEX-7 (24mp), NEX-5N (16mp, same sensor as K-5) and K-01 I(same sensor as K-5, but no ISO 80). The 5N and 7 are very close in all measured characteristics, with the 24mp sensor a tiny touch ahead. The K-01 shows some better numbers at high ISO's due to the jiggery pokery that Pentax implements.

I read a post by Richard Butler at DPR, where he stated that the 24mp Sony is the best APS-C sensor. The higher resolution is something I want for wildlife photography, so I consider this a positive announcement.

Pentax used to take cool leaps with there new releases and I don't think the 24 is a great leap, and the FPS will be about 4 or 5 fps,,,, And there is just too much info to read to a single card, we will fall asleep waiting for Raw files to be recorded.. I wish they would have stayed with the 16 mg sensor and fixed the AF and Flash systems and a few other things and sold the K-5n for about 1500.00
The K-5 Is a hard camera to improve upon except for the things I listed.

Shot with new camera gear, I'll bet .
Will be interested to see the direction that Pentax/Ricoh takes. It could be that the APS-C flagship appears "boring" so that we all rush out and buy the "exciting" FF. I'm not holding my breath right now though. Maybe in another six months or so.....

I was commenting on your statement that the 24mp Sony sensor is not as good as the 16mp Sony. This appears to be a common misconception, probably because people are comparing high ISO samples using DPR's interactive widget, which does not account for resolution differences. DXOMark equalizes file sizes to 8mp before comparing SNR.

As LamyTax mentioned, the Sony SLT's are not directly comparable to an SLR due to the fixed translucent mirror. Also, the ISO 80 setting on the K-5 stretches the DR beyond the norm, because the Sony cams only go to ISO 100. All these things combined have created a belief that the 16mp sensor is superior. I think the Sony 24mp sensor is a good step forward, but hopefully there are improvements like those you mentioned to go along with it. Since most of us expect the K-3 to be a higher performing body than the K-5, surely they have made some gains in other areas. The AF and Live View improvements in the K-30 were a good start.

The "cool leaps" that Pentax has made have never been in the area of sensor technology. Pentax have always used Sony sensors except for the K20D and K-7.

Is it Sigma that refused to pay for licensing on the various mounts? Maybe that explains the lack of support from Pentax? I've heard of stories of other Sigma lenses misreporting data.
Sigma never paid for licences and won't begin to do so.
Their lenses often ID themselves as Pentax 'counterparts'. My Sigma 28/1.8 is IDed by LR as an SMC Pentax-F 28/2.8

Stupid huh? Sigma did the metadata crap. Not Pentax. We should bitch at Sigma, not Pentax.

Maybe the K3 will have 24MP APSC with 12FPS and 102000 ISO and have a buffer and write speed to match the dual XQD card slot, and be able to shoot in crop mode like just about every other decent make out there?? There's always hope.... ))
I don't care if it has 120fps and 1 zillion iso, I want a FF so my 15mm,20mm ,50mm F1.4, 85mm F1.4 ,35-70mm f2.8, 28-300mm etc FF K-mount lenses don't get a 1.5x crop.

Even if that camera had tons of issues?

I must have missed that week in classes, but...

Tactfully stating... Eerrr, what flash systems/issues?? I have all of the current Pentax dedicated flash units, also two Metz ones - and then a whole studio ful of lighting. Perhaps I just haven't come across it yet??

If it were me... (and I'm not Pentax), I would announce a new roadmap with the addition of the FF lenses. And the reason for that is where this would motivate customers to stay with Pentax rather than jump ship.

But that's just me.
Humm... wouldn't that kill all sales of the K-3 ?

I'm thinking this might affect those wanting FF the most.

The way I see it, the notion that Pentax would loose business based on an upcoming release is about as likely as that of expecting to keep customers on crop sensors because no FF exists. ie. I'm waiting on a D800. However, if Pentax were to announce a FF roadmap, then I'd likely hold off and wait to see what came out of it. That being said, since lots of people shoot multiple formats(such as with; Nikon and Canon), then I'm not inclined to think that a FF announcement wouldn't have much impact Pentax's bottom line at this time.

Then again... its not as though I speak for the market either. And so this is nothing more than my own limited opinion in the end. TBH. I think Pentax is long overdue for the introduction of a FF camera in their product lineup.

I would be happy to see a 24MPx senor outperforming the one in the K-5. But I don't care about the P&S pixel race at all (only helping a few niche users) and I do not want inferior noise performance as can be seen in the above samples.
And yes, personally developing the JPGs from doesnt change a thing.
I'm not 100% sure, but... it looks as though the NEX-7 RAW could yield more detail at ISO6400 than the K-5. Granted... the effects of noise would inevitably consume the noisier sensor as sensitivities continued to rise, though for the most part it looks like the 24MP sensor could have the potential to produce better output than its 16MP counterpart.

That being said, I'd also point-out that the K-5 has the advantage of low level NR over the NEX-7 as well. And so this may just be enough to offset the difference in the end. IOW. if Pentax were to couple the same low level NR with the 24MP sensor, it may be enough to place it in the same noise performance area as the K-5. Though I'm really not sure how long it could as things moved toward maximum ISO.
