There's no reason why a variable aperture zoom can't be just as good as a fixed aperture zoom.
In theory, perhaps this is true. But in my world, the theory works like this:

"I want to get the best value, and not spend any more than I have to. So I'll get the variable aperture."

Then I get it, and I find it doesn't perform as well as a fixed-aperture lens. So I say to myself "Dang - I really do have to spend more money for better quality!"

I could tell myself it's just as good, but it really isn't. So then I have to decide whether it's worth making that compromise in order to save the money.

WRT lens prices in general and all the pricing discussion referenced here -- c'mon, give P-USA a break. They have to pay for all these retailer workshops and PopPhoto articles somehow, don't they? I mean, really, we've done nothing but complain for years that we get no marketing, no B&M support, no repairs, no Cust. Svc and now, there you go, we have fiver or six in-house shows and a magazine cover!!

The aperture of your zoom won't be changed. You can use your DA* in APS-C mode.
I don't get why someone should spend 2500 for a body to use it in crop mode getting lower QI than a one-third-the-price APS-C camera.

1. K-300
16MP old CMOS sensor used in K-01 and K-30, re-using the K-r body, i.e., penta-mirror at 0.85X and 96% coverage.
RH's Certainty Percentage Close to 100%!

2. K-5N
16MP new CMOS sensor technology, new image processor, APS-C of course, 100% penta-prism finder at 0.92X, articulated screen, new 21-point SAFOX X AF system (central 9-crossed, surrounding 12 points linear), improved continuous tracking and zone focusing, 8 fps, improved video functions (with manual control and continuous AF option during video recording, very possibly).

The line of cameras without K-3 (even APS-C) looks rather weak - K-30 and K-5II(s). Two DSLR cameras...

Not sure it is a hoax but K-5II, K-5IIs and K-3 (and even talk about a K-3s) is highly strange.
If K-5II comes together with a K-3 I think it is less strange if there will be only one K-5II and that one will be without the low pass filter. No K-5II with it.

Did they also say if they would be allowed to disclose it too?

All this speculation makes my head explode. I have one. I have a strong gut feeling, that Pentax will announce something majestic. A 560mm f/1. It's not a DA*, it's DP* for Diesel Powered. It has a built-in K-0.002 body which is half the size of a truck. Note that it is also a truck. Basically, a pickup truck with giant camera body instead of cabin. Inside it looks like a space shuttle. Every feature the body has, has a dedicated button in the cabin. And it has six wheels. With a giant lens where the front of the truck normally is. So that's one thing. The 7 other things are that 7-speed automatic, and the last is reverse. The engine is also used to operate the focus. It's really quick AF at the 5000-6000rpm range. On the downside, it's still crop sensor.

No but for real men it has an 'M' setting, with which you can manually push around the 9 ton truck, and operate the focus with hand crank.
