Hadn't thought of that...

I wonder how long before they raise the price on it and offer rebates?

The price which is still unknown, is expected to be lower than similar lenses from other manufacturers.
Why this lens and not those of more practical FL's for a company struggling with market share?

Because Pentax already makes telescopes that are very similar - minimal investment. Also, there was a hole in the long end of the range of lenses and other makers have started to release even longer lenses recently.

I think Pentax' moto is to stand-out.
Though I'd agree on the strangeness factor of such a lens when there is so much more to consider.

Then again... perhaps this lens will be so incredibly good for the wildlife crowd that it will redefine the Pentax name for years to come. - time will tell.

I think the hope is it will be bring a 'flock' of new birders to Pentax and away from Canon.

As for the white, I wonder if I can buy shares in the LensCoat company? - LensCoat

This fills a gap in the lensline for users who are prepared to buy an expensive lens with a brand new camera.

Leave it to Pentax engineers to figure out how to squeeze nine wings!

Hmm The front screw of the prototype is gone so it seem that the collapsible design of the prototype has been abandoned. Too expensive or complex to implement?

7 elelements in six groups and 2 ED lenses means it is not going to be cheap.

There has been much whining about Pentax not having this lens....

I think this a trial to see if a Pentax FF will sell...
They have counted all posts that ask for this lens, then they will look at salesnumbers and if salesnumbers don't match the number of people who complained about it, they will know the same applies to FF.. So i f there is no Pentax FF, it is all due to those who said they wanted a long lens but not bought it when it came...

It shows some promise regarding optical quality.
