Because Canon doesn't share, and Pentax already has a history/relationship with Sony sensors (as do other cam makers.)

Is there a reason Pentax/Ricoh wouldn't use the Canon 5D MKII 21mp ff sensor in a new Pentax full frame instead of the Sony/Nikon sensor? Just asking
???

I'd be happy with that Canon sensor, ff, low noise, etc. I hate hving to use noise reduction on ISO800 shots from my K5

Canon NEVER ever did share one of their sensors.
But they use Sony sensors in their compact cams

Did you check DXOmark on this subject? While the Mk III sensor is nearly a stop better in ISO, as would be expected simply from being FF, DR is actually less than K-5. IOW, not much special in the Canon sensor.

Now, if you think you can talk Nikon into sharing their D800 sensor (if it really is theirs), that would be an interesting move.

Well, I own both a K-5 and a 5D MKII. Frankly, both have their advantages and drawbacks.

The mix -a kind of K-5 with the 5D sensor- would be quite tempting as Pentax ergonomics and functions are far superior (please just grab/add the f2.8 central AF point of the Canon). But if one can recover nearly 1EV from the highlights, just push the shadows by 2EV and you will see what banding means...

At ISO 800 one has to use NR on the Canon. At ISO 6400/8000 and sometimes even higher, it's possible to get consistent images from the K-5. Good luck with the 5D... Well, it might just be mine, and I must admit I'm not that experienced with it yet.

Am desperately waiting for Pentax to lauch that rumored 24Mp FF so that I could stop carrying 2 brands. It starts to become heavy and expensive

Where would be the first place to have a record of the announcement? Pentax's website? (not likely)? Here?

Wat?

The 5D2 sensor is ancient tech. Who would want that. Having worked with the 5D2, I can confirm it has plenty of noise, and banding, and low DR.

And I don't think I've ever heard of anyone ever having any noise problems with the K-5 at only ISO 800. At that ISO, K-5 output is very, very clean.

If Pentax went with a Canon FF sensor, which will never happen in a million years since Canon keep their sensors to themselves, the one in the 5D3 would be the one to choose.

I shoot with a 5DII & K5 also. If one of them came out with a small full frame with WR, I'd be back to one brand in a heartbeat.
