K20D Pricing Discussions

Caught this interesting article about pricing of the K20D vs the GX20 - apparently the announced price of the GX20 is substantially less than that proposed for the K20D, at least in Europe...

Pentax chiefs hold talks on price of K20D digital SLR camera news - Amateur Photographer - news, camera reviews, lens reviews, camera equipment guides, photography courses, competitions, photography forums

Of course, US prices are an entirely different matter - while I understand that the GX10 has always been priced below the K10D in the UK, it seems that the US prices have been much closer... and the US prices have been lower than the exchange rate would suggest vis-a-vis UK prices! As always, stay tuned for real prices when there are real deliveries...

What exactly are the main difference (if any) between the GX20 and the K20D? Are there any other than the badge ands some unimportant appointments?

At times the Pentax will be cheaper due to rebates. I don't recall seeing rebates on any Samsung DSLRs.

If you were Hoya

Just for fun let's say you are the person from Hoya overseeing the Pentax operation. The first thing Pentax shows you is the profit they are making from Samsung on the GX 20. They then show you the profit they will be making when the K20D hits the stores. You think, cool! everything is in line, looks like they have a handle on this whole thing. Jan. 24th comes along and Pentax announces the K20D will be in the stores shortly for X price. Then Samsung says they will be selling the GX 20 for X-$300. You are shocked so you go to Pentax and ask them if they knew this. Their response is no but they will straighten it out by the end of PMA. Your thought process has to be these guys are either incompetent or idiots. They have been dealing with Samsung for at least 6 months on this and they didn't sort this out long ago?

If I was part of the Pentax team responsible for this I'd be updating my resume, being careful to omit this.

Regards,
Ken

Well said, Ken!

The bottom line there is just no excuse for what has happened with the price differential.

As the Japanese are known for drastic methods of "saving face", the least the boys at Samsung can do (after pulling this fast one) is ship a supply of swords to their Pentax/Hoya marketing counterparts to assist them in quickly putting themselves out of their misery.

It appears the Hoya/Samsung "partnership" is not what it seemed to be.

Hoya/Pentax need not be too concerned, though. There is actually at least one forum member on DPR who is fully prepared to spend 300 pounds (Hmmm- no pound key?) more for the Pentax version - even if it turns out to have fewer features, since the Pentax version will have higher resale value.

Choke, choke...

Let's get real evil here. What if after looking at the numbers the Hoya person realizes something isn't right. He then makes sure he somehow runs into the Samsung people much before the Jan. announcement and over a few friendly drinks he finds out what they will be selling the GX 20 for. He again looks at the numbers and determines Pentax will be making the demanded 10% on sales to Samsung. He decides not to clue Pentax into the Samsung price so he can find out what he is dealing with. Hoya is satisfied because they are getting their 10% and now have a chance to see just how bad things are handled by Pentax so they know what they will do next. Remember Dick Genene's management style at ITT? The open flame concept. Turn up the heat and see what your people can do.

Well us pricing is $1299 for the k20d and $1399 for the samsung.

I have the distinct feeling the MSRP is going to be a fantasy for other than ealry adopters. It just remains to be seen what real street price will be.

Heh, the Koreans are not known for the quality of their blades but they do have instructional videos on Tae Kwon Do illustrating how to perform a self-roundhouse to the temple

I imagine the whole delay of updating the websites may be due to Pentax being in negotiations with Samsung over the pricing debacle which if it stands just put the wind out of the K20's sails, especially if its offerering more!. Lets hope for Pentax's sake it gets sorted out.
