Widest APSC rectilinear lens yet -Samyang 10mm - Images Added

Kraków, September 14th 2012 - Samyang Optics company is thrilled to invite all participants of Photokina fairs held in Cologne to visit our stand no. A025 located in the hall 2.1. We will introduce a prototypical version of the Samyang 10mm 1:2.8 ED AS UMC CS lens.

Samyang 10mm 1:2.8 ED AS UMC CS is a prototype of the ultra wide-angle prime lens designed for use with cameras fitted with APS-C/DX sensors. Its extremely short focus length and rectilinear imaging system ensure extra wide angle of view amounting to 110 degrees (~107 degree for Canon version). As a result the lens is a comprehensive tool for architecture and landscape shooting. New Samyang 10mm 1:2.8 ED AS UMC CS is similar to the 35mm system lens with 15mm or 16mm focal length in the case of Canon APS-C cameras.

All details concerning the optical construction of the lens and available mounts will be published at a later date. The lens will be introduced for sale either at the end of 2012 or in the first days of 2013.

im mildly curious about it - it'd be fantastic if it was sharper than the zooms, more flare resistant, and lacking in CA.

But the Samyang 30 1.4 sorta dampens the expectations

'Widest APSC rectilinear lens yet -Samyang 10mm'
So according to SamYang - my APS-C Sigma 10-20mm doesn't exist?

I think they mean widest APS-C rectilinear prime.

Doesn't the Sigma 8-16 count as rectilinear too?

The Sigma 10-20mm (which I have as well) "only" has an angle of view of 102.4 degrees @ 10mm... so the Samyang is wider...

That said, the 8-16mm is wider at 114.5...

Widest rectilinear PRIME lens. The widest APS-C rectilinear wide angle is still the Sigma 8-16.

No, I think they mean degrees of angle of view.

Wow, looks very interesting! I can't wait to see a review. I really hope it has good optical properties. With Samyang you just never know.

Widest rectilinear PRIME lens.
I hope they won't strain the definition of "rectilinear"
like they did with the 14/2.8 (more than 5% mustache distortion on FF)
or the 24/1.4 (almost 3% barrel distortion on FF).

Sorry, I guess the 24 - the most recent one.

Why would you want to buy this and not a Sigma 8-16? this doesn't do AF, I guess it's a price matter?

For the aperture, f/2.8, which is further than f/4.5 from the point where diffraction is starting to matter?

It would also be superior (particularly for architecture) if it has significantly less geometric distortion.

I recently replaced a 10-20 sigma with the 8-16. Excellent IQ by any standard, zoom or prime. For one example, see my posting in the "I spy" game, on the last page, "massive canopy supported by pillars." Substantial convergence distortion was correct with photoshop elements. A bit earlier in "I spy" there's an image of an outdoor staircase (a street that's a staircase), and if you can find it, there's a picture of the Azure Window on Gozo, also taken with the 8-16. I think the 8-16 Sigma is the best ultra wide, zoom or prime, currently available. And, so far as I know, there isn't another lens that offers 8mm.

Do you mean zooms? There are two 8mm prime lenses that I can think of right off.
