Those that don't see a problem with SDM will never believe there is one, no matter what information is offered.

I have contended for some time that it is a design fault and the quote at the top of the interview appears to support my contention:
"A: One could say that the AF components used in these lenses was prone to failure from the get-go due to their design. The 16-50mm and 50-135mm lenses share the same circuitry and motor, which is why they both have such a high failure rate. Other SDM lenses don't fail as much."

So there IS a problem with units built "pre-2012" !! What a surprise! (sarcasm)

I had my DA*16-50 sent for a SDM fix about two years ago now. It has been good for the most part except that it has recently - a couple of momths or so - shown signs of infinity focusing struggle. I have to move the focus ring just a tad and then it gets going again.

As far as I am concerned, ALL units (of the 16-50 and perhaps the 50-135) should be accepted for a "callback" (recall) if they should malfunction.
Now that it has been admitted in public that there was a SDM issue, they (Pentax) should logically accept ANY such lenses for repair at THEIR cost.

Fair game.

My DA*50-135 & DA*55 have been in Japan for almost 2 months awaiting SDM replacement. I hope to god they add the new components although I doubt I'll ever know.

I just emailed Pentax USA and asked them to fix my pre-2012 16-50 and 50-135 for free.

It will be interesting to hear back.

I really think we should start a collection now for that poor soon-to-be-unemployed engineer...

It would be useful to have a list of the starting serial numbers of the new 2012 lenses with the fixed SDM.

Well, I am hoping Pentax takes the high road on this.

An example they might follow is that of Canon, which apparently fixes -- for free, and even if it ain't broke -- a design flaw in the mirror attachment of the original 5D.

Nikon did that with a bad sensor.

If he were an American I'd agree. Employment laws being a bit more employee friendly in Europe I'm not so sure. Hope he keeps his job, I do appreciate someone finally telling the truth at Pentax about SDM.

I haven't seen any evidence that Pentax changes policy based on what one of its regional distributor's may say. Ever. Let alone a repair tech. But I wish you a good outcome.

I'm 100% certain it will get parts thrown at it. I don't think the components are as flawed as the entire design is and there's no fixing that.

Funny, that's not what the guy quoted at the top said. But then he's just a Pentax technician. You probably know more than him.

Jens Petersen is also an engineer.

So you're saying he's worked on these lenses and has some idea what he's talking about? My daughter, son in law, nephew, brother in law are all engineers, and Im not taking their opinion should they offer one on the subject either.

I would suspect a Pentax engineer and repair tech would know something about SDM.
