Perhaps. However, the issue with the SDM fails when they are still under warranty or just off. In addition, repairs fail. Canon and Nikon have a far longer warranty on their top lenses.

Here, in France, the warranty is the same.
But, you are right, SDM failure during first 2 years is something that do not show respect to buyers.
I think that is why the 560mm is DC....

Is there some way you can disable the SDM on a DA 50-135mm using a K5? I read elsewhere you can do it using a K-7 body.

You need an older body (K10D, K20D, K-7 and a few others will work) to be able to hack the firmware of the lens. Once done though, that lens will use screwdrive AF on any body.
