WiFi for Samsung GX20

It looks like Samsung has a WiFi grip for the new GX20

I'm not too impressed with it- seems kinda like a hack-job. And wifi doesn't seem fast enough for shooting lots of Jpgs or any RAW- the current implementation (802.11g) just doesn't have the bandwidth for lots of 11mb files, especially if you are far away from the other device or there is any interference.

As you can see (based on the fact to use it you need to open the sealed camera door), this is designed for studio/portrait type work where instant review helps sell the job - think of a JCPenney's portrait studio. They'd go bonkers for this.

I'd like to know if this grip would work on a K20D. Anyone know?

I don't think so. Samsung had to make a grip for the GX-10 because the grip for the k10 wouldn't fit on it; I imagine the same is true with the GX-20 and the k20.

Well if the technology is in the grip and Pentax decides to build one then in theory it should work for the K10D and the K20D. That would be sweet. I wounder if the grip for the SS will work with the GX10

It's interesting but this design is a bit strange. Carrying yet another cord is not very tempting, why isn't it built into the edge of the grip, retractable, with just one end with a slimmer connector? Simple and would be much more practical.

Or yet, if they knew this was coming, why didn't they included the contacts under the body?

Also, I wonder if the camera has to have the software to select the network to use and provide any encryption keys. If that were true then the Pentax would need at the least a firmware update.

the grip is prototype status still for sure -- the GX20 could probably go back under for some revisions, to make this easier.

personally, i have to agree. wifi isn't gonna be fast enough, and, if i owned a GX20, i wouldn't want to have to pay a premium for something like this that i don't want..

then again, i didn't want SR, which is why i got the 110d.. so.. i wouldn't be getting the 20, since it has SR.. hm. quandary..

The camera would not need software to configure which network the device should connect to, there are several devices that operate by plugging them into a computer before hand to set the ip and security info.

Furthermore if that is plugging in the the sd card port and the grip can connect to a K20D the function would most definately work.

I believe it could be useful for studio work.

It's a gimmick that's going to get X number of people buying the GX-20 + grip for that feature, and Y number of people buying the GX-20 in hopes of getting the grip later for that feature.

That's X + Y K20D's Pentax would have sold if they can get to a price point equal or lower to that of the GX-20.

Features sell products, regardless whether people use them or not.

I use WIFI professionally to "shoot and send" images from my nikon P&S camera (S7C) to a professional Trimble GPS unit. We do asset tracking, and spatially locate points of interest. The GPS unit runs windows CE and has a WIFI receiver built in, so images get dumped right into the trimble in the field.

This would be a huge deal for me if I could get it to work...I need a weather sealed DSLR solution, this P&S nikon isn't cutting it.

Gimmic for some maybe...and for other professionals, an absolute necessity.
